State of the 40K... by spikedpunch

I decided I would do a long-ish post about my 40K habit or hobby, both terms seem rather appropriate at times. Overall, I am rather annoyed with myself about how I have let a lot of things sit either on my work table or in boxes for way too long. Last month while doing a lot of cleaning, I decided that my collection needs to be culled out even further. A lot of it is because some figures are of a limited edition flavor, and as a result will unlikely ever be used by me. Others were ebay finds that were bought in the hope that I might be able to save them from this misguided attentions of other hobbyists, but many of those have only found temporary shelter in a random box as a result of my good intentions.

Also, I would like to get more into making my own molds for some figures and/or parts. So much so, I have already set into motion a few diabolical schemes of my own to get others involved too. (Hint, hint, hint...)

List of proposed 40K projects, not in any particular order of importance:

Rhino Primaris and Land Raider Excelsior:
I love me the rules greatly, but I am not crazy about the models. The Primaris is nice, the big eagle radar dish is a great center piece of it, but the rest of it and the Excelsior leave a bit to be desired.
So while some of my “secret sources” get me a hard copy of the rules for the two, I have a rough idea of designing my own models. I have been wanting to do an very ornate land raider for a long time, and I am looking forward to this being that opportunity to do so. Though one bit of regret is I am not so sure if I should make this be at all modular as my previous tanks. Dealing with the rare earth magnets can be often a pain, and having one tank take up the space of two with all of the extra swap-able bits can be a bit of a drag at times.
My Primaris will be based around a FW predator kit, with some modular parts to it as well. I would like to make it be able to serve as a hunter, a stalker, and/or a whirlwind. As with the Excelsior, this is going to be a lot of work just for one small tank.

One Storm Raven and three Storm Talons:
Oddly enough, I do not have any flyers in my space marine army, which is weird considering the current edition rules. Besides painting all four of them, I really do not have too many grand plans for these.

One Centurion Squad:
Another missing unit in my army, I would like to try my hand at doing a small squad of these. Will have to magnetize them to have modular weapons. Not sure if I want to make them be able to be assault units or not. About the only real goal at the moment with them is to convert them to have a more MK 5 armor look to them.

Characterful Command Squad:
I am not happy with how kind of dull looking the current command squad I have is, and would like to do something a bit more ornate. This would mean basically making each figure a special conversion piece on its own. This will probably be more annoying work than might be warranted for a squad type most players give little thought to. Especially since I am not sure on what theme to go with. The apothecary is the only one I really have an idea for; basically a harden medic with bionic limbs. Though would have to spiff him up further than just that.

“Four Kings” HQ Figures:
Another project that I had tried to do a few years ago was to make four Chaplin figures based upon the legend of the four heavenly kings, each one reflecting a different equipment layout such as riding a motorcycle, jump pack, and what not. This kind of turned out to be a bit disappointing when a person I had hired to paint them did a crappy job of the whole thing.
Now years later, I think I would like to do something a long the same lines, but with each “king” being represented by a different HQ figure; Commander, Librarian, Chaplin, and Forge Father. This might be as convoluted as the command squad mention prior, especially since I would like to make each figure as individual as possible.
