So, I see that at least seven of my submissions had their tags modified.
Were they important tags? Did I miss something dire? No. Someone (or someones) went through my gallery, found all images depicting herms and added a 'hemaphrodite' tag to each one...even though they were already clearly marked as herms.
Because, I guess, the term 'herm' isn't clear enough on what the subject matter is? Or does herms not automatically fall under the hermaphrodite category?
It's anal nitpicking like this that really irritates me about this tagging system.
Once I had someone tag one of my drawings "fat" which, while being technically accurate, is not a thing I would have considered to be "dealbreaker" in looking at an image. My thought is if anyone is adding tags, it's to specifically block an image of that type rather than helping make it more visible in searches. I thought it was rather rude.
Tried to add "Couldn'tAgreeMore" as a tag to this as a joke Ehehe.........
In all seriousness, I do agree....that comes off as extremely self-centered to me, going around modifying other artists' and commissioners' post tags to suit their own preferences. At the same time, though, I do get similarly irritated when uploaders add spam-like amounts of "tags" such as "hot" to describe a sex scene that doesn't take place in the desert or a sauna, or "sexy" for obvious reason, though more justified when they do that INSTEAD of tagging useful things like displayed genders, sexual acts, or character names and their owners.
This is one reason that, despite all the guff it gets for some of the more vocal parts of it's userbase, it's semi-anonymous nature, the fact that they'll host any smut and every smut so long as it's relevant and not real life, and the fact that countless artists flip their lids when their stuff appears there.....I avidly support e621.net.
Their staff actually GIVE A DAMN, and while, yes, they do get numerous cases of people posting art without citing the artist or character owners and occassionally trying to claim ownership, or paysite content, they uphold their DNP/Do Not Post list, and takedown requests. You don't even need to pull a DMCA, just show that you made the art by commission of the people who own the characters in it, or that you own said characters, and they'll take it down when you say so. Or, naturally, submit a request to be added to the DNP List, and then whenever a post gets IDed as being your art or having your character, they take it down automatically (and they DO have more than a few active members who seem to do nothing BUT look for DNP posts to flag). Users can and DO get suspended or banned for repeatedly posting DNP or real life images.....posting ANYTHING from SexyFur results in a near immediate "Emergency Purge Protocol" like response that's actually kind of funny, until you find out the reason why is that the owner of SexyFur has tried to get them legally shut down for having any images from his paysite on there (typically by way of accusing them of hosting CP)
Likewise with their Tagging system...quite frankly, despite appearing, rumored as, and in some cases even deserving of being called "the depths of the internet", it's got the best image tagging and searching I've ever seen. Users can tag w/e, so long as they meet a hard coded requirement of at least one depicted Species, at least one depicted Gender OR "Ambiguous_Gender", either the Artist or "Unknown_Artist", and a fourth tag of some other detail, and all posts are marked for admin/moderator approval first, while still being flaggable by other users if it's DNP. More responsible and more seasoned users can and regularly do come in after and clean up the tags, albeit bemoaning the users who don't tag well, and linking the source or even multiple sources is highly advised by staff and responsible user alike. Users can and REGULARLY get warnings and soon after suspensions and bans for repeatedly not tagging right, god forbid you go vandalizing tags.
I also like e621 and its tagging system. They also have a better community-driven moderator team than a certain site I will not utter here. If Weasyl could instigate a system similar to e621 in the idea that certain common tags have related tags that default to one of those tags (example: "herm" and "hermaphrodite" could default to "hermaphrodite" or "furry" and "anthro" could default to either).
I definitely support this notion. Preferably with the ability to use more than six tags in a search. xD
To be fair, prior to Char stepping down and EDF-Darkangel taking his place I don't remember a single member of the e621 staff being "hired" or appointed by a company (assuming the original staff team of the current e621 wasn't hand picked by Dragonfruit/Bad Dragon Enterprises/Varka, who I honestly have lost all respect for alongside that certain site and it's main person). New Admins/Janitors are selected by a vote of the existing Admins, from the top tier members of it's userbase in terms of responsibility and maturity. If there's any way to do right by a community site model, it's that.
could this be automated? same thing happened to me and those were the first tagchanges I've ever seen on my pics. Also, the tag "furry" was added to some of them. Because, you know, there's so few furry stuff on weasyl
It's not automated; these images in question have been up for half a year, if not longer. So, these tags were recently put in.
And I had that 'furry' tag added in one of those, as well...because, clearly, it's not obvious enough by the site name alone what theme the majority of the art is. O.o
It could be that someone recently set up a bot that does something like this:
Search for submissions tagged "herm".
Check that each one is also tagged "hermaphrodite".
If it isn't, add the tag.
If such a bot is in operation, I would expect that we would see similar additions of synonyms or parent tags, (e.g. "canine" would be a parent to "wolf" or "dog").
I suppose you could peruse their gallery, inserting redundant tags as you go.
But then, they probably don't have any submissions, they just feel compelled to mess with yours...
I would never resort to such tactics; as doing so would be incredibly childish/petty.
Besides, even if I were that immature,I wouldn't be able to do it,anyway - as tag modifying is done anonymously.
not actually anonymous! there's a "history" link on submission pages in the tagging section that shows you what user made what modifications.
characters and journals don't have that, but that's for complicated historical reasons.
I turned into an OCD nutcase about tagging my photos on Flickr. When the site got to be a pain in the neck to use, I dropped off, but few people have ever tagged my photos. It's always been humorous stuff, except one whacko who left some nasty obscenities on a photo he didn't like. Flickr does allow permanent banning, though.

Must... resist... the urge... to add new tags... XD
