A conversation about Patreon by Myoti

I've been bouncing back and forth about bringing this up, mostly because it's been difficult to settle on how I feel and what I'd actually like to do.

From what I've personally seen, Patreon appears to be a pretty good for those that want to help out artists a bit more. I've heard there's a few problems here and there, but I'm not entirely sure what they are; if anyone knows a bit more how the system works, that would be helpful!

I've been debating what I would actually do with something like this, however. A pretty common plan I've seen is "here's reward tiers, and I'll enter everyone in a raffle!," but I wasn't sure if that's what I wanted to do, and recently found Patreon doesn't really allow stuff like that anymore (apparently follows under gambling?).

After thinking on it, ideally, I'd like to use Patreon as a way to fund some game design projects. It's probably no secret it's something I've dabbled in, done for other projects, and play around with pixel stuff off and on as it is. Particularly, I really enjoy the general art aspects and creating monsters and characters, so that's definitely the path I'd prefer to go down, even it's something simple like using RPGMaker with all self-created assets, etc. It's something I'd really really like to be able to focus on more for awhile, if at all possible.

Now comes the part I'd like to discuss. The thing that keeps bugging me about this, is what would be a good incentive for something like this? Would people specifically want a hand involved, or would me giving the first game out or something be good enough (like a demo first, maybe a short game with a few levels).
I've been poking an idea and creating a few assets recently, so if I were to setup a Patreon for this, I would at least have a lot of examples for what kind of project I would be making, it wouldn't just be jumping in blind or anything.

Bunch of tentative stuff that needs a lot of planning, so it's something I'd want to hear opinions on from those that already follow me.

*Oh, I'd still be doing commissions, no worries. If people responded well to this, I would probably be taking less, but I enjoy making stuff so I doubt I'd just stop anytime soon!

Side note: Also, thank you to everyone for your comments about YCH stuff a couple of weeks ago. It was really insightful, and I always appreciate knowing how my followers feel. :)

Yea patreon says no to raffles now.

For a game I'm guessing some of the donation incentives could be like...access to game demos, access to beta testing, access to individual assets ( sprites and music), and including artwork in there as well!

Somethin' along those lines, yeah! I mean, whatever I first make I might even do as a short game and just release it for free anyways. Something just to be making content, and make new stuff from there.

The main problem with patreon is the fact that people can remove their pledge at any time and get access to certain content immediately upon pledging. This now does not apply to any pledge above $100 because they charge for that immediately. You will have access to which pledgers are actually paying though, so a lot of people are going with the content delivered after payment clears route.

Adding to this, I actually really like patreon and have quite a few ongoing pledges!

That's good to know, thanks! :)
