how do the people of Weasyl feel about closed species, or just species in general? There is a Hype over at DA, but what of this site?

I don't see very many adopts on this website. The ones I do see have links to other websites. So, Weasyl is more of an advertising space for FA, and DA. I have some fairly extreme feelings about closed species, but if you're going to sell them, there's a fairly wide open market over here, since not many are taking advantage of Weasyl sales.

I don't really care about sales or popularity over here, more so if anyone at all here has an interest in roleplaying or just cool designs in general. There's a space for creating new characters, which I think is pretty cool, but I hardly see it used. I don't get many commissioners here, so I'd have to agree this site is more of a "Im also on FA!" or something. May I ask what your feelings on closed species are? I kinda have a few things to say about them too lol.

I don't believe in them, unless someone has a copyright lawyer.

I see tons of people making them, but never backing them up by law. Saying things like, "you may not make your own." Unfortunately for these people, there really aren't any laws protecting them, unless they go through the expensive process of protecting them under law. Yes, you have a copyright to yourself. However, denying someone the right to re-create them, when you personally do not have a lawyer to back up the fact that you made them, or want to protect them, then you're up a proverbial river with out a paddle. It annoys me when I see people on a high horse, acting all high and mighty over the shitty creatures they made. (Example) Some fox with fire eyes and a stick coming out of it's left ear (Example). Call them what you want, and tell everyone that they're not allowed to make their own. That's such bullshit, and it makes me laugh. The only time it wouldn't make me laugh, is when people back it up with legal status. What bothers me even more is, these are the same people who make tons of money drawing shit like bugs bunny getting ass fucked by someone's shitty dog fursona that looks as generic as possible. They take copyrighted characters, make money off of them, give no credit to the original makers of bugs bunny, then run off with the money. Only to tell you that you have no rights over their "closed specie." I'd sooner tell these people to jump off of a bridge with rocks at the bottom, than give them money for something they can't legally enforce, or sue me over.

TLDR: Get a lawyer, copyright protect them under actual law, don't rage when people make their own version of your stuff when you don't pay to have it legally protected.

yeah the people that take closed species that seriously are just the worst of people, who are they to say I cant draw something, right? Now, I"ll admit I have a closed species, but it's not because I think I'm "SUPER ORIGINUL!!!", its simply because I know if it were open, not only would the traits be meaningless, but the whole purpose I made them would spiral out of control.
I made them for more of a roleplay purpose. They have restrictions because there aren't that many in the world I created for them, and if they were open, I know it would become "look at my original fox wolf mix of this species mary sue eye bleeding rainbow thing!" If someone makes a look a like of my species, good for them, it's seriously just a bunch of mixed traits of what we see in real life put together in one animal. All closed species are simply just chimeras...
I see the whole rule of "do not make one yourself" is just more of respect of the artists wishes...but honestly, sometimes its literally just food slapped onto an animal, or a very obvious mix of two species. You can trademark a name, and copyright a character, but not traits... take pokemon for example, people make ocs all the time, but as long as people aren't like "LUCARIO IS MY CREATION!" nintendo doesn't give a shit because they cant claim blue anthro dogs, that's just too broad of a spectrum...
The thing about my species, is I really...really don't give a shit how original people think they are or how popular they get, I don't even care if the design itself is shit, I just am concerned with the roleplay aspect of it, the world I created for them pretty much. If someone really wanted to make one, who am I to say what a person cant draw? I wouldn't really let them partake in my world, because obviously they had ulterior motives behind it rather than just a wanting to be apart of the world. Certainly I wouldn't through a bitch fit though if it happened, because this is the internet, people need to grow the fuck up...
TL:DR: I created my world and species to bring people together, not to make money, not to be popular, and most certainly not to exclude people and put a limit on what they can draw. People who do any of the above, don't deserve the species in the first place...

I can imagine how having a closed species can be beneficial socially, as you know everyone who's got a character of your species and can theme artworks acordingly. I don't mind them myself, I was more than happy to adopt one from Iluq @furaffinity & @Weasyl, though it depends on you doesn't it? x3

yeah I just noticed especially on DA People are more in it for the surface looks, and popularity. More often than not I see people specifically ask for "popular species" and not even know the lore behind them, it saddens me. Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate it when people like my species and stuff, but what would truly make me happy if they wanted to not only partake in having a creature of mine, but participate in the world and roleplay aspect of it too.
I guess what I'm truly asking is "do you think roleplaying like this would thrive in places like FA and here?"
