Two Week Update by Rob Swanson

So, it has been two weeks sense I stopped being a Furry. I just thought that I should post an update for that. Having been removed from the fandom for a few weeks there are a few things that became more evident as time has gone by. Most importantly being removed from the fandom has allowed me to be a bit more honest about some things. Let me explain.

  1. The art was less interesting than it used to be. Maybe it's because of the artists I was watching. Then again most of the work I was following did not really require the characters to be furries. You could have replaced "furry" with "Hispanic", "Asian". "Middle Eastern", or any other descriptor and not notice a thing. It's way inside the realm of personal preference, I know, but it just seems a little wasteful to make such unique characters and then not do anything with their unique features.

  2. The drama was just so toxic. There is a steriotype that furries are addicted to drama for a reason. Being a furry meant dealing with just so much crap. Don't think there's drama? Come back next time FA has a meltdown. Speaking of which, they're overdue for one. They've been averaged one about every three months for the last few years. Anyways, getting back on track, the drama was ruining it to some extent. As someone who was involved in furry art as a hobby drama kind of kills things.

  3. Some of the oddballs were getting to me. They're in every group/hobby/whatever but it has been my experience that the ones I knew in the furry fandom were far more vocal. Most everyone reading this doesn't fall into that group. If you're wondering if you do, go check your journals on FA and here on Weasyl. If you see more than a few foot fetish journals in the last month then yeah you. It's one thing to keep a separate account for that stuff, but to make it as public as possible is off-putting.

  4. Simple lack of interest was the largest factor. Like I mentioned in a previous journal, furry stuff was a bit of a hobby for me. I could go three weeks or three months between periods where something just gets shelved.

I completely agree with your #2 statement...the environment at FA is so overly-dramatic and toxic that it's hard to keep going there to look at art of the artists I actually like over there. A part of me debates being gone from that site for good.

To me...I love art...it doesn't matter the subject matter if the artist(s) are doing what they love to do. "Furry" art...well...I grew up with the Disney stuff, like most kids--so I've always liked anthropomorphic characters. But I have always considered myself to be a "fan of all things", because I love so many different things, I don't devote my time and life to any one fandom...I love "Transformers" just as much as I love "Pokemon" or drawing cute chibi characters. :)
