I bought a deep fryer for myself this past Christmas and I have to say, it was a good purchase!
I've been having fun playing with it actually. It's an inexpensive way to make cheap foods more exciting.
Just made myself a test batch of home made Doritos using corn tortillas and ranch dressing mix. It's much cheaper than buying them at the store and if you can use a deep fryer at all, you can probably make these.
Just cut a bunch of corn tortillas into fourths, fry them up, and sprinkle them with the dressing mix.
I made roughly the equivalent of a $1.49 bag of Doritos for around 75 cents (and I still had dressing mix and loads of corn tortillas and oil left over for another batch).
The only down side is clean up and set up are a bit of a pain, but I suppose if it was too easy I'd weigh 400 lbs by my next birthday, and that wouldn't be good.

I keep thinking about springing for one of these, but I'm kind of scared - both of the hot oil and of the possibility that I would deep fry everything and subsequently be unable to fit through doorways.
