Commenting Questionairre by OddOly

Getting kind of disappointed with Weasyl lately - I try to comment more to generate some activity but people rarely even reply to comments I leave, let alone comment on my art. I know I have some watchers who actually see my art but most of them seem to be doing it on DA as well so... sometimes I really don't know what I'm doing here. And maybe I'm getting old but I feel to tired to repost stuff just for the sake of someone stumbling on it, maybe DA and Smack Jeeves are enough and anyone interested should find me there... I mean for me the main point of posting of multiple sites is getting to talk to people who don't have accounts elsewhere and if you don't get to talk...

Anyway, to make it less negative here's a questionnaire you can fill in if you have the time-

1 - What motivates you to comment on a submission?
2 - What demotivates you to comment on a submission?
3 - Are you discouraged to leave a comment if the submission already has a lot of comments?
4 - Do you feel more inclined to leave a comment in a submission if the artist usually replies to its comments?
5 - Do you find me intimidating to approach? Why?
6 - What impressions do I give off (or, what do you assume about me)?
7 - Any suggestions you want to give?

And I'm still here (for now)! I like how the site looks, I like a lot of art here (though not the stuff that tends to get on the most popular section on the main page, but honestly sections based on most faves are rubbish on all art sites) but...

1 - What motivates you to comment on a submission?
A strong emotional reaction to the image, if there is a question in the description, or response to the artist's feelings being reflected in the image such as comfort or congratulations.

2 - What demotivates you to comment on a submission?
Crippling shyness, the feeling that my comment wouldn't be worth clicking through the notification to read, being unable to articulate my feelings about a piece without sounding too broad "i like it duhuh' or too narrow "I like the face" and fear of being suspected of ignoring the REST of the drawing

3 - Are you discouraged to leave a comment if the submission already has a lot of comments?
Yes. Shyness, fear of being repetitive, especially if there are multiple pages of comments.

4 - Do you feel more inclined to leave a comment in a submission if the artist usually replies to its comments?
Yes. It makes the artist look more open to me and helps with my shyness. When I see a lot of comments with questions or otherwise conversational content go unanswered, it makes me feel 'why bother? they dont care'.

5 - Do you find me intimidating to approach? Why?
Occasionally. I'm not educated as you are in the subjects you like drawing the most and feel like my commentary would be irritating/ignorant or not engaging.

6 - What impressions do I give off (or, what do you assume about me)?
You are dedicated and creative but tend to bend conversations toward talking poorly about yourself, even in comments you give to others. It makes me sad, you're such a cool person.

7 - Any suggestions you want to give?
    Keep on keepin on.

Thanks for taking time to fill this stuff in! Re: 2, 3 and 4 I'm kind of similar - worrying about saying something off or being repetitive or leaving a long thoughtful comment that would get ignored. I try to actively comment on comics on Smack Jeeves (where I host Cop Story) and it resulted in actual friendship which is very cool but there were also a few times when it felt like the artist was like "aw yeah, keep writing nice stuff, I won't bother replying tho". :P

When it comes to subject matter - please, never be afraid to ask about something! Don't feel like you HAVE to comment but also don't feel like you can't approach me, publicly or privately. I'm by no means some sort of big expect and I ended up learning stuff about disability almost suddenly but I never have a problem with answering questions (I do complain about being asked "Why do you draw disabled people?" because you'll be surprised how often it happens) but generally I don't suspect some sort of ill intent everywhere and it's hard to annoy me there. I mean it would be annoying to walk up to a disabled person and say "So what happened to you?!" (I'm sure you don't do that, just as an example) but with OCs we all love going on about their backstories and such. So yeah, don't feel the pressure to comment or to not comment! :)

I've been told recently that some sort of FAQ comic/reference sheet/something of the sort could help readers find out more about my characters but I don't want it to feel like those news stories where they talk over heads of people with conditions they are trying to tell about, you know? I think it would even alienate some readers more... But I am thinking about some sort of really mundane slice-of-life comics showing ordinary days of my characters. Do you think it would help?

And yeah, point taken about talking poorly. I try to curb it (I know someone who shows her art and adds all kinds of self-deprecating stuff so I know it can be annoying in a conversation) but I guess I might do it without realising sometimes because I thought I was doing it less lately. All my family is very critical, self-critical and sarcastic and sometimes it's fun but generally I'm trying not be exactly like my parents because I know it can hurt. Hard to break this habit though. But I'm working on it!

1 - What motivates you to comment on a submission?

Usually it's when I feel like I can add something to the discussion, such as like here. I won't comment on many submissions, and if I am watching someone, I won't favorite their thing unless I think it's really above what they usually do. So if you have something thought provoking, or if the comments have started a discussion, I might join in.

2 - What demotivates you to comment on a submission?

When it's an average picture, for the artist or when compared to myself.

3 - Are you discouraged to leave a comment if the submission already has a lot of comments?

    Not at all.

4 - Do you feel more inclined to leave a comment in a submission if the artist usually replies to its comments?

No. I know my comments are read, and even when they aren't, while it's nice I don't think that it means anything for you to reply back to me.

5 - Do you find me intimidating to approach? Why?

I don't know you, so this question is meaningless to me.

6 - What impressions do I give off (or, what do you assume about me)?

I assume we would have things in common (such as love of art)

7 - Any suggestions you want to give?

Try for something thought provoking, make art quite a lot, try to go above and beyond, and if comments are important to you, then do something that can please your audience. You are on a furry themed art site for instance. So those pictures that have a furry of some kind will get more comments than people who just draw people. So you have to really try HARD to get comments when you are set up against people who fill the place with badly drawn cat and wolf people. Or maybe I'm being hard on you. And me. I've only drawn one furry.

Hey, thanks for commenting! I'm curious what exactly you mean when you say "thought-provoking"? For me it's really subjective so I wonder what it means to you. :]

Do you see many pictures that are "above usual"? I don't mean in my gallery specifically, I mean generally, in your gallery, in anyone's gallery, any example you like. It's not quite how I understand art so it's a bit hard for me to understand so I had to ask!

I think comments are important to me in a sense of conversations about stuff I find important/interesting/fun/worth mentioning. I'd like to get to talk to people here more but I guess I'd rather do it with like-minded artists than draw popular stuff for the sake of being popular.

Eh, thought provoking can be many things. It can be a question about "who are these characters?" when you don't put it in the description, or it can be a view point that I haven't thought about before, such as wondering if Superman's anatomy is different in a specific way from human's, I might say "huh, I never thought of it that way".

As far as "above usual" in talent, it's purely subjective and hard to grade. It's usually a minor difference, such as seeing someone who struggled with anatomy finally draw a hand that looks realistic in a pose that is very natural. I don't really comment usually because mostly I'm just shy and browsing. If I comment, I sound either too crazy or too stuck up in my mind, so I just keep comments to myself.

So... it's probably the same for plenty other people. I wouldn't take it personally. After all, if I watch you, that already means that you are a good artist in my book.

Aw, thanks - both for replying and watching! :) Yeah, I dunno, I don't think anyone here has a grudge against me (as far as I know) or anything, it just gets a little sad sometimes because it's nice to have some conversation going and it usually works on DeviantART or Smack Jeeves but Weasyl only gets constant journal about people forgetting to update or people wanting more activity. I try to comment more myself but it's like things don't quite click here yet...

1 - What motivates you to comment on a submission?
When I have something to say. Something more than "this looks cool good job", which is what I usually think. I don't even always comment on pictures I really like, because what should I say? "The anatomy is spot on, the angle is unusual which implies you've stepped out from your comfort zone, the colors compliment each other really well and it's just overall nice picture that gives me fuzzy warm feelings." It would just sound... weird. Okay not weird, just not something I would say unless the artist would ask me directly. I tend to comment more on pictures showing a hypothetical scenario or artist's unique representation or something, because then I can talk about the scenario and share my opinion. But again it must be something I have an opinion of.

2 - What demotivates you to comment on a submission?
99% of time I think my comment is lame and unoriginal and it will just annoy the artist. Sometimes I start writing a comment but end up deleting it because I re-read it and realize it sounds stupid. Also what REALLY discourages me is that I'm a slow writer. I rewrite and rephrase my comments so often, that writing few lines takes me minutes instead of seconds. And I just don't like to waste my time like that.

3 - Are you discouraged to leave a comment if the submission already has a lot of comments?
    I don't think so?

4 - Do you feel more inclined to leave a comment in a submission if the artist usually replies to its comments?
    Again I don't think so...

5 - Do you find me intimidating to approach? Why?
    Nope :3

6 - What impressions do I give off (or, what do you assume about me)?
That you're very passionate about art and especially your characters, I imagine you spending half of your day with your 'head in the clouds' constructing your characters' universe and stories. Not that it's a bad thing, I actually love doing it myself!

7 - Any suggestions you want to give?
I don't know, I'm a bit of a hypocrite, I love getting comments but I don't give them out myself :C the poor amount of comments discourages me too, I wish this place was like DA or even FA. I don't think it's just you, I've seen lots of people going back to FA because Weasyl just seems so empty compared to them. So I don't think there's anything we can do to get more attention, unless Weasyl gets more traffic.
