Art Block help? by Son-Of-Mat

Do you guys have any tips on getting rid of an art block?

This one's been hanging around for almost a month now and refuses to leave.

It doesn't even pay rent.

Tell that bum to GET OUTTA THERE! xD

But the thing is that each art block is different, and has to be treated as such. Ask why you have it, then you can begin to go on and find ways to stop it in its tracks. I know that when I feel forced to do something that I'm getting no compensation for, I get art block, so I've stopped taking requests. Get to know your triggers, and you'll be able to stop art block before it starts. :) Here's a website that has quite a few tips that I use to combat the block when I DO get it though.

But the WORST thing you can do is take a extended hiatus, because when you come back, your skills will be pretty dull, and you'll get frustrated in that you know you can do better, and fuel another art block.

I normally change up my environment. My room tends to be much darker, so I pulled back the curtains during the day. I have been on a huge metal kick, so I decided to go look up old musicians I used to listen to, and got a lot of inspiration from that. Also looking at other people's artwork, or art that you really like can help. I made a folder just for art that I like, in case I get art block. I go into the folder, and sift through the art until I find a piece that I especially like at the moment.

Also this blog is great for art block: stuckwithartblock.tumblr.com

Another suggestion would be to try doodling, or looking at things you enjoy drawing and then doodle them. I created a character that way, by looking at crows for a couple days I ended up doodling up a character that I really love.

And one more thing. If you have a work list of art, and you get art block, put the list to the side and draw for yourself. If all that fails try taking a day away from art, and go do something you wouldn't normally do. By changing your routine and environment you stimulate your creativity. you're so used to the environment that you're in, that it can get stale, so liven up the place and try new things! Especially with music, go find some new music on tumblr or pandora or youtube, it will def help!

are you having an issue technically like, being able to draw something you think is good, or are you having inspiration problems? there's a pretty big difference! plus there's a lot of factors that go into art block, on either side, and different fixes will work in different situations, but here's some of the stuff i do.

-draw a lot of terrible shit until stuff starts looking how i want it again. sometimes you're putting too much pressure on yourself to make something good technically, or something really deep and conceptually interesting, and that's a good time to just draw stupid shit that you like. the ideas and skill will come.

-draw from life. it makes you better and it doesn't require too much brain power (or at least i think it doesn't) and it can get you out of your head quite a bit. if you're feeling too uptight like you're going to mess it up, try doing gesture drawings. like quickly capturing the movements of people on campus or in a restaurant.

-switch mediums. if you mainly do digital stuff, put it down and try to do something traditionally. emulate someone's style for an exercise. try to learn how to use markers.

i think the most important part of shaking yourself out of stuff like this is just switching it up, telling yourself that you can make mistakes, and trying to get out of the mental bog and back into the emotional trance-ish state of drawing. but again, this might just be stuff that works only for me! good luck either way though :3
