It's much more laissez-faire than Neopets for example, and the artwork for the different dragon breeds (coupled with a bajillion color and gene combinations) is sheer eye candy :>

You can even choose which 'flight' you're affiliated with. The flights correspond with 11 different elements and influence the eye color of your starter dragon and any dragons hatched in your own lair. I'm in the nature flight, of course ;>
