SpiderRants: On FA and the difference of clients by Buckdasystem

Here comes Spider bitching about Furaffinity again, quelle surprise, but I'm probably going to put a logic thing to this too, so bear with me.

In a recent discussing I've been having with friends, we were going over FA yet again. Yes FA and the userbase there is rancid and terrible. On the technical side, lethargic and useless admins, bad code, laggy, frequent website outage, etc. On the user side, FA is composed of a bunch of disgusting, tasteless, shallow people looking to get their fix for their fetish or porn.

It is repulsive how often real quality art is overlooked or pushed to the side for some base, fetish fulfillment. It has gotten to the level of why I quit dA in terms of how only anime and fandom artwork gets any attention around there, same applies to FA and fetishporn. Furaffinity is not an art site anymore, it is a porn site.

So why am I bitching today, this is nothing new I'm griping about? Even me bitching about other sites like tumblr and Weasyl not getting more deserved traffic and commissions they should isn't new. The reason I'm bitching and ranting today is to "explain" where it comes from.

When an art site sucks ass, the first people to leave are the actual artists. I've noticed this on Weasyl and tumblr that the majority of people to ditch FA are long term, fairly talented artists. Artists are seeking a better artist community, a better interface or ability to manage their gallery.

CLIENTS, or people who come to art sites to just "consume" the content are the ones to linger around much longer. These consumers have less of an incentive to leave. They just stay as long as they get to view what they want. When you are watching 200 or so galleries, what difference does it make when about 10-20 of em leave. Since commission artists tend to stay where the money is at, they aren't going to back off right away, and lets not forget galleries composed of other artists.

Now for me skirting around and generally avoiding going to FA because of the diseased, filth that generates there has lead to actually some interesting results in my commissions- I've been getting more commissions that are more FUN.

Let me expand on this. Many of the commissions I've gotten lately have been more creative, interesting, have had more effort or design put into them compared to my past at FA. The reason for this has to do with what was explained above- artists.

On Weasyl, there is a much larger concentration of creative artists- illustrators, writers, composers, etc. Artists actually request better commissions, they have a more reasonable eye for design, composition, and storytelling. Their characters are more well thought out and interesting. This is very much different from the other clients who don't do much creative on their end, have fan characters, ask for the same fetish situations over and over. These clients have no desire to expand on what they get, to create a more detailed and narrative composition with feeling or emotion behind it. Its about basic fulfillment, not actual...yaknow...ART.

Now when it comes down to it, yes, it really sucks for commission artists that business has not transferred over from FA, but keep these things in mind: on Weasyl and tumblr, your smaller communities will be more artist oriented, and while you get less feedback and commissions, the ones you do get will be of greater value and quality due to the smaller, more art focused communities behind them.

First read this on FA but came here to comment ;)
I think you're dead on. You wanna be visible on FA? Draw porn. You wanna be even more visible? Draw niche porn. Who cares if you give no effort and draw like shit.
Sadly, the people who pay for art want that kind of stuff, and the artists need the money and have no choice but to accommodate, to some extant.
I just don't see how things could change...

I'm on FA too (Draco-furrys) I don't have fetishes and I don't post porn piece on my account. (only mi first post is a commission, others are gifts people made for me) But I must admit i totally agree with you about this website.

The same for my favourite, I can fav fetish piece but only because I love the style of the artist; as I did with you, there is some pieces of you i don't like but i fav them because i love your style. :)

Welp, time to go show this around to as many of my artist friends as possible.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I know several artists that don't want to move because the user base is on FA. I keep trying to say that not only will the user base not move if none of the artists move, but the user base that is already here is much higher quality!

It will definitely take time for people to migrate, but the key to jumpstarting that transition I think is quite simply to be more active here. So often the excuse is the lack of activity here, so the people that already are here need to change that.

Part of it I also believe is a perception problem. People who believe 'there's no activity here' are often watching a lot of parked profiles (basically, the sort where someone sets up and then disappears, keeping it here 'just in case this place becomes the new big place'), and then find themselves in that spot - not because Weasyl is dead, but because they people they want/expect/demand on Weasyl are not here, which is not at all the same thing.

I hope more people are, these days, exploring the site and discovering content and people that are new to them!

That's one reason why I'm trying to follow people here that I don't follow on FA. If I'm following them here, it's because they've posted something here that I saw and like, and by not following on FA I'm encouraging them to be more active here.

I'm not quite yet to the point where I'm comfortable unfollowing people on FA that are active both here and there, but as more artists migrate to at least cross posting most of their stuff it'll get more likely.

Will you say the same things about Weasyl or Tumblr if FA goes down for good and one of those sites becomes the new popular? Or do you think the site and its staff will influence the community to be better?

    • Link

Well currently it is more difficult to get away with some of the stuff people do on fa due to weasyl having a "artistic standard" clause in their T.o.S. that they have actively enforced. Mainly a big strength for weasyl is its "new". But give about 3-5 years after it becomes a popular mainstay to see how the community settles with it (as with most art sites)

  • Link

I definitely agree, though it is sad that the user base here is so small, so its harder to get commissions. If I could get commissions here more often, I'd probably leave FA. Unfortunately some clients seem to think that its selfish on the artist's half to want a less toxic environment to work though.

I'm a lurker, and I agree that the art on Weasyl is a lot cleaner and more original.
I admit, if I see something I like, I won't favorite it if it looks suggestive.

    Holy shit. PREACH. \o/

I'm seriously trying to be more active here. It is nice to see that as I continue to post, im getting more watchers
