a wiki as a character database? by spoonface

blegh trying to figure out how to get Tiddlywiki to save changes hahhah, so balls, I like the format a lot otherwise.

I want to make a wiki-based character/worldbuilding database for easy browsing, so I'm asking if you can rec wikis or other such applications/sites for that sort of thing?

I personally use onenote for that kind of thing! It's easier to input info wherever you are as I know for sure it has mobile apps for iOS and android that autosync with your computer version and you can access it on the web (plus it's apparenty now free???!)

Just my two cents : D

    • Link

Interesting! I'll give it a look, thanks for the rec.

      • Link

Not a problem! Hope it works out for you!

  • Link

Oh plus you can obv link it to others otherwise it wouldn't be nearly as useful

  • Link

ahh sorry you've been having trouble with tiddlywiki. if you like it more than the other options, I might could help you work out what's wrong, just hit me up on AIM.

      dangit I forgot I don't have trillian on this new computer oop. I really do like how lightweight tiddlywiki is, I'd like to be able to use it ;___;

I'm using a wiki for world building.
I just use the wiki plug-in for wordpress on my homepage.

    • Link

Oh cool! I should give wordpress another look.

You could make a site via Wix or Weebly. I've seen a few people do that. There are also sites like Toyhou.se coming out, as well as a few others that are already up and running. I don't use any of those though so I can't really recommend a particular one.

    • Link

Yes I'm p interested in Toyhou.se. x3 I used to use Charahub but its 100 character limit was, well, too limiting for my purposes, so I hope Toyhou.se doesn't have a similar limit.

      • Link

It doesn't as of yet. If I manage to get enough invites I'll send one your way!

This is something I have wanted to do for a while. My data is so horribly organized. I've been tagging things on tumblr to keep them in order and it's just terrible for that.

I finally figured out how tiddlywiki works and wow it's fun and simple to use. You can make links for nonexisting "pages" (or "tiddlers") and when you click said link you can edit the associated tiddler. Cool stuff.

      • Link

        this looks promising

      • Link

Okay. I can't get it to save changes. What did you figure out?

        • Link

Did you figure out it actually saving them but refreshing the pages just hides them?

As per "Choose which tiddlers are displayed at startup:" lacking the new tidlers?

          • Link

Yeah i only learned that quirk after trying out classic tiddlywiki where the recently edited tiddlers are in plain view instead of being hidden behind a tab, hahaha

            • Link

Or well the titles of said tiddlers anyway

              • Link

What tidlywiki were you using/am I using then? I've been coming across "classic" an its making finding how-to info difficult. I am still doing this offline (to my knowledge. I don't /think/ this is uploading anywhere) via firefox and I have some questions that you may have solved.

When I edit a tiddler it bumps it to most recent. it totally destroys the order in which I'd posted, posts, and I wonder if there is a way to view them by order in which they were first created? You have any idea?

                • Link

yeah afaik it's offline unless you share it via a public link like on dropbox or something.

I actually dunno (yet?) how to maintain an order unless you make a tiddler that contains the links to tiddlers in proper order. idk if there are time stamps, either. @_@

"I actually dunno (yet?) how to maintain an order unless you make a tiddler that contains the links to tiddlers in proper order. idk if there are time stamps, either. @_@"

A time stamp showed up at one point when I copy pasted the text to a .txt. It was like "one second ago" though so idk how useful it will be.
But this is a problem I have been getting around for a while. I can easily fix time stamps with just going like "Dec 19 2014" etc., like I do all the time anyway. Can number the posts if I really have to. on Weasyl, there is the the problem that still has not been fixed of no journal pagination such that I have had to do this. However sticking tiny little works that I blast out in a few minutes into a list /manually/ is going to get old especially when I am workingon a new platform that I might rather abandon. I do LOVE writing in this format though and being able to import pictures is nice. There is a lot that is really nice to this and I hope I can find a sufficient work around to the problems.

"yeah afaik it's offline unless you share it via a public link like on dropbox or something."

Okay so clarification on that: does this file have access to the internet? Like if its on my hd, and I gave someone a link to it somehow, they could see it? or I got to upload a chunk of it to dropbox and then share that link? That would be really cool and easy.

                    • Link

AFAIK the file itself has no access to the internet (since it's a local file and not a designated site) unless you were to, say, host the .htm file on dropbox.

I use xwiki for my own overly-complicated world building references. It's opensource, super easy to install and use and I highly recommend it.

    • Link

Er, also, I only use this as a private reference, I can't tell you how useful it is if you're interested in posting this publicly online.

  • Link

Check the copyright information on whatever wiki you use. I started out making a wiki for my worldbuilding project to try and organize information, but I wasn't satisfied with the copyright my content was being placed under. By the nature of wiki it makes content free and open and available to other people to use and build on, which for me wasn't acceptable D:

Ah, I see :T That's kind of a bother. I do intend to make separate databases for my eyes only and for private and public viewing, but idk :T hmmm
