Original Life Hiatus by JayNaylor

Original Life is going on an indefinite hiatus. It's not an easy thing for me to do. I've realized how stretched I am, and it's not just about physical time, but the time spent thinking about new projects. Several things have lead me to this:

  • The ideas for new stories and pages aren't satisfying to me and I find myself begrudgingly working to fill out my weekly quota, while I'd rather be working on other things.
  • This is disheartening to me because I like having that avenue of creativity to keep out there. I just haven't had the place of mind to really be into creating it for the past several months.
  • The only way to maintain the comic as it is would be to eat into the production of other things that I prefer working on, or to give myself no spare time to relax at all. I've found that when I make myself work on something, the quality suffers.
  • I don't want to grit my teeth and force myself to produce pages I'm not happy with.

There's every chance I will update the comic sporadically as I come up with page and story ideas, instead of forcing myself to produce two pages a week regardless of what else I have going on.

1,210 webcomic pages in, I'm slowing down. Thanks for the continued support. You're great fans.

I am sad about it, but I completely understand. Good job and thank you for the wonderful stories and countless hours spend reading your comics curled up in a blanket. I look forward to seeing whatever else you end up working on!

I posted over at FA but again, thank you for sharing OL for as long as you have!

You've vastly more than earned a break - I have a hard time even naming any other comics that have gone on for so long! If you still feel the urge to play in that world, I'm sure everyone will be more than happy for whatever you come up with - I know myself I'd love to see even simple sketches or behind the scenes art or single panel scenes. But you have no obligation to do anything of the sort - you need the break!

Well, if that's going to happen... at least let people know when you update. Checking every week to see if anything's gone up would just be annoying.

I usually just check the RSS Feed

      • Link

        Well, not everybody does that...

Still, it is just a request.

Saddened but it's understandable, don't want to burn your creativity out.

I have been enjoying the latest story arc but I can totally understand where you might be running empty on energy and inspiration when you have the amount of projects you do. Thanks for letting us know as I do check your site every week for the next week's worth of comics. :)

Totally understandable dude. You have more then earned a break.

I undestand man. The muse is not always consistant.

  • Link

    This seems reasonable.
Although this comic is the main thing I watch from you, nobody ever said you had to keep any kind of regular schedule. I generally just check the RSS feed from time to time to see when this comic updates.

Fun fact: Original Life has almost as many pages as Better Days
    Better Days: 634 pages
    Original Life: 571 pages

I guess you just get bored of something after the first... 500 pages. ;-)

I will miss seeing the updates.

Will miss following the stories, but I totally understand. I'm amazed at how many pages you managed to keep on a stable schedule.
(Just an idea though, you could always put guests comics too. Either from friends and people you trust or a contest? Could be fun)

Many have not come this far with a comic. Going slow from time to time is nothing to be ashamed of ^^

Better to step back than to turn something you love into something you resent. I love the comic and characters, but this is a very understandable decision.

You know, I started reading this one, but I lost track somewhere. The last part I remember reading is when the little girl gave something to one of the boys that made him a muscle bound something or other she was chasing after. Maybe I should start from the beginning and save them all. :)

    You do great comics. :)

Its been a year, I'm curious, how has the Hiatus worked out for you?

Just thinking back to this announcement from last year (re: Original Life); How about just a new installment once every few months? I know other artistic endeavors are more profitable (and most important of course) but, it might be interesting to try? Thoughts?
