P-Patreon? Gauging interest, taking input! by thatlittlegoblin

So I'm considering doing setting up a Patreon, and I'd love to hear some input!

I have a couple ideas for rewards in mind but if y'all got some of yer own you'd like to pitch I am all ears. :D

$1/mo - access to a private news feed where I'll be posting some of my sketches and wips and an internet hug!

$5/mo - Access the the Patreon feed + early access to a monthly .zip file of all sketches, works in progress (that I'm allowed to divulge), and personal work sketchthings!

$10/mo - All of the above + a ONE TIME headshot sketch (uncolored) of any single character.

$20/mo - All prior rewards + early access to high resolution downloads to personal works, plus access to monthly polling for sketch theme suggestions! (Some restrictions apply.)

$50/mo - Everything above, + private invitation to Patreon only sketch request streams! During the streams I'll try to do at least one request per person if at all possible. Gonna take a shot in the dark and say these'll probably be flat-colors at the most, depending on time/number of requests. ;w;

$100/mo - All of that other good stuff up there + your choice of a ONE TIME Full-color, full-body illustration of one/two characters (can be mailed directly to you as an 8.5"x 11" print upon request) -OR- two one/two character non-color sketches every month! ++ AND access to private stream tutorials upon request!

$200 - All of the aforementioned goodies + a handwritten letter from me thanking you, an option to upgrade from a digital illustration (print) to an acrylic painting -OR- one one/two character flat colored image per month.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Cake you want to feed me?

    I'll be honest and say that I never really liked the concept of patreons. Maybe I'm looking at them the wrong way, but they always seem to have a large amount of benefit for the artist with little real reward for the patrons. People say that they are mainly to support the artists they love, but I would rather show my support by repeatedly commissioning them.

    Of course, I'm only one person, and there are obviously people who think otherwise, so take what I say with a grain of salt. You are one of the very few artists I'd seriously consider supporting via patreon, but my overall view of the system still stands.

      Well as a general rule I tend not to post "unfinished" works by and large well, anywhere- once they're posted I kinda go "EH GOOD ENOUGH" and move on. And for the most part, my personal work stays in the dark cause LOLSHY.

      So the whole sharing my wips/sketches/personal work -IS- actually a perk I guess, in comparison to a lot of other artists. Part of the reason I considered doing this at all.

      I would LOVE LOVE LOVE (srsly love) your thoughts on how to make a Patreon with rewards that do have more benefit for those people who would wanna support me. By and large, I was trying to think of things that would allow me to give back while still being able to work on regular commissons and personal works. I have no idea how ta do that, the above's the best I could come up with. :D;;;

        Well I will say you're on the right track with the tiers you've suggested. I think the best way to look at them is figure out what you're willing to commit to within a certain time frame and price accordingly. I like the idea of sketch streams, but it depends on how often you're willing to host them.

        I may take some time to put more thought into these suggestions later. Like I said, I'm normally not a fan of Patreons, but you could be the first one to change my mind.

    Do a lot of artists do the .zips or downloads? Just makes me worried people may repost em elsewhere more easily and not give credit and junk D; Which i don't want you getting credit for your amazing art!! hehe.
    Also does 'one time' mean like, when they sign up for their donation right? :3 Otherwise those seem pretty good rewards! :D

      A lot of artists do do (hehe, doodoo) the .zips and downloads. All of my work would be signed, and the "early access" part means that pretty much they're just getting a sneak peek of works I'll be posting once they're finished, or warm up sketches I don't post anywhere/show anyone usually.

      And yeah, "one time" means when they sign up they get the option to have free art from me.

      These are just suggestions though! I don't know if I even wanna do this yet, or if the rewards aren't good enough etc etc etc

        Oh okay that makes sense! Subtle watermarks are yer frand! :P And these seem like pretty great rewards and I'm sure people would back ya if you made Patreon-specific content. Like...Folios are popular it seems. Group of images with a theme and stuff that maybe backers can suggest or vote via a poll :3 Maybe for folios there will be a backer chosen a random that may be in an image and get a surprise? idk haha

          Oh man that's a really cool idea! And I've never made a folio before (time/money constraints) so that actually sounds like it could be a lot of fun!

          • Link

            haha yeah! Definitely do exclusive content cause that will have folks wanting to subscribe just to see!! And i would say only have folio access to backers over $20?(if you can choose that idk) I guess depends how many images/quality. Like if they are all full-colour or just sketches/lines/minimal colour haha
