Back from FA:U - Con Report by Malachyte

I had such a great time! I'd heard a lot of mixed reviews about the convention, but in my opinion it was a lovely con. The number of attendees wasn't overwhelming, and the staff for the Den were very attentive and kind.

I had planned on vending through the Artist's Alley, but my roomie, anatawabakadesu/Wren was kind enough to let me use part of her Dealer's Den table, so I ended up being a dealer for the first time! I'd always wanted to get myself doing it, but was too nervous about not being 'professional enough'. Things went just fine though, and I think I'm going to start vending at most cons I go to, now (though it's a bit too late for Furpocalypse, I think). Thanks to everyone who enjoyed my art, took a card, bought an ATC, or just took the time to chat with me at my table! I met a lot of great people, and did my best to push past my annoying shyness X3

As for sales, I managed to just break even with hotel and food costs due to last minute expenses, but I think at my next con I should be in the clear for making a real profit. Exciting news indeed. I have a huge list of things I want to do to make my table a bit more unique and organized. Next year I need to make sure I bring a sketchbook for others to draw in, too; I didn't really expect to make any friends, to be honest, so I didn't bring it with me ^^;; Now I know better, I guess!

I would like to share a hilarious/creepy highlight from the end of the convention. I had posted my number on the community board thing at the con, hoping to find a third person for our room last minute. On Sunday evening, late into the con, I had more or less forgotten about it. I was at dinner with Unyko and her friends, and I got a call from a restricted number. What ensued was a conversation along these lines:
[Older man with a thick New York accent]: "Hey yeah, I hear you're lookin' for a room? You need a room or something like that, right? You need money?"
[Me]: "Yes, we were looking for a third person for our room. Were you interested?"
[Man]: "No, yeah, I don't need a room, but like you were lookin' for a place to stay maybe?" He continues on, speaking in vague terms about needing/not needing a room, then asks where I'm from.
[Me]: "...I'm from Connecticut, why?"
[Man]: "Yous guys from Connecticut, okay. Well look, you need money for the room, you're lookin' to drop the cost. I'm a real rich business man, yeah? I got a couple hundred dollars."
[Me]: "I'm kinda confused. Are you saying you just want to give money to us to help with our room cost?"
[Man]: "Who you stayin' with right now?"
[Me]: "It's me and my friend Wren in the room."
[Man]: "Glenn? No, you don't need Glenn. I got a couple hundred here. Just you in the room, okay?"
It was at this point that I put things together; restricted number, proclamations of offering money, and sudden hesitation to have a male in my room with us. I was now aware that this random dude was offering to possibly buy some "activities" from me for a couple hundred dollars.
[Me]: "Okay no I don't think you can help me BYE" click

The moral of the story is people can be super creepy, or something.

My regular commissions are open again now that I'm back, so work will continue as before. If you've recently turned in a form with me, or commissioned me at the convention itself, you'll be hearing from me shortly. Thanks!
