Is this a fetish site now... just another FA? =( by Kamakru

I'm really disappointed in the direction this site has taken. I won't lie. I've noticed it lately and then a friend brought it up to me tonight and that pretty much confirmed my thoughts as of late. I guess I didn't want to admit it but...well there it is.

I can open a browse page here and on FA and there is no difference in content. When I first joined here I felt that the community was strong, and the art was actually pretty decent. I could browse and find things I liked, but now...ugh.

I'll be up front and just say that I am not into heavy fetish work. I don't mind a few dongs here and there - I've seen them in person, I can handle it - and I draw plenty of boobs and butt, but the over the top obsession with inflation and vore and sex and sperm and diapers...it's not the kind of stuff I want to look at. And yes, I realize I'm also on FA but I'm used to it being there (plus it has a much larger user base, so there's still variety). I was looking for something different than that, not more of the same.

So, why am I here? I'm already on plenty of other places:
[Deviantart] [DrawCrowd] [Facebook] [Tumblr] [Etsy Shop]

It's just that the type of 90% of the subject matter I see on this site isn't me, and it's not what I want to see or be around. I am just so sad that it turned out this way. I had high hopes for this place.

I know there are some good artists here still, but as far as I can tell all of the artists I watch here are also on other sites where I watch them as well. What makes this suck even more is that I love the layout of this site. I love the banner, and the color scheme. But, it doesn't help much when all things considered...

Is this a fetish site now... just another FA? =(

There is actually a pretty nice debate going on about this exact subject on the forums right now.

    https://forums.weasyl.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?5461-So-about-that-quot-General-Art-Site-quot-goal

    • Link

Ah thanks, I hadn't seen that!

  • Link

I know the feeling. Unfortunately, I have all but stopped participating in the community at large.
But as a mod, I'm trying to if nothing else, make a better and safer space than FA where people can post their stuff. Tastelessness notwithstanding lol.

    • Link

      That's sad to hear =(
I'm glad to know that you're still working to make it as safe as possible, though. Thanks for your hard work =]

        'welcome~
Thanks for being here and opening discussion <3

I'll admit the amount of fetish art -has- kind of turned me off at times :/

Though at least when it comes to categorizing, I like that Weasyl has so many filtering options. Custom Tag filters are really something I reccomend.

Nowdays, I pretty much browses only with quite a couple of tags filters to avoid the content I dislike the most and, as ironic as it might sound, I've generally found I enjoyed the quality of the art when I was browsing when the max maturity allowed setting set at "13+ maximum".

    • Link

I replied to your other comment before seeing this one lol. But yes, I'll definitely be using tag filters now and I might have to try adjusting the maturity setting as well.
Sadly though, just knowing that the rest of the site is still filled with all that heavy fetish stuff still puts me off a bit. D:

      • Link

        Yeeeeah, I hear you there.

This said, I've added a bit more on tag in a second reply, which I felt could be helpful to you.
I know that myself, since a lot of the commissions I get are often of the fetish sort(transformation art <.<; ) I've finally decided to set my "Commissions" folder setting to hide the art within the folder from my profile and main submission art to leave only my personal art as visible unless directly visiting the commission folder.

That might be an incentive for me to draw more human/fantasy/scifi art, it's something I kind of miss at times.

        • Link

You really have this stuff figured out! I feel lucky that the only fetish art someone asked me to draw was involving tickling feet lol.

  • Link

I thought it was going to be obvious that this is the direction that this portal will take regardless of official intentions.

Vast majority of Weasyl users consists of Furaffinity artists who decided to leave for a better organized site with more competent staff and administrators - hence this is why their produce ends up here.

I knew what I was going to sign up for, so I'm neither surprised nor appalled. =D

    • Link

Either way though, it still started out differently. The art on this site when it was still new was promising to develop into something....better.

      • Link

Don't give up - there still is a decent quantity of non-fetish artwork and a fairy sizeable selection of artists that one cannot encounter on sites like deviantART and whatnot. =(

Though you are right, I guess. Sadly, Weasyl's only chance of community growth depends on human flow from FurAffinity - otherwise Weasyl is as good as dead with sites like Tumblr or deviantART intercepting vast majority of regular artists and art lovers alike.

        • Link

I haven't given up completely (yet), since LudoCrow mentioned tagging I've since done that and it' really made a difference with browsing at least.
The problem is that the content of the site is what's going to attract and repel artists based on what their needs are. Honestly if I were to come to this site now and look at it as a possible new member, I doubt I would join. It's not really about how many people it can reach, it's the content (which would be very difficult to change, unfortunately).

I have been noticing the same thing. Until the turn of the year, I could see some real decent art just on the main page, and would have 5+ tabs open to see the rest of that person's art to see if I really want to watch them. Now, I don't even bother looking as it's the same terrible crap on the front page of FA. Yeah, my art isn't the greatest. Believe me, I know. It's why I don't upload much of anything. But it has gotten bad lately. I may have to figure out how to do those filters so I can hopefully filter out much of the crap to maybe (at least for me) make the site look better.

This has turned into just another FA, it would seem. And that makes me sad. If DA's layout was better, I would probably stick to that place. At least it has a bigger variety than just fetish porn.

    • Link

I think this place started out strong and was very promising, until as you say just recently. D:
I still find great artists on FA but I don't look at the front page to find them, instead I surf through other people's favorites.

    • Link

On the flip side, deviantART's moderators practically gave up on moderating anything that isn't a potential legal threat to the site as a whole and quite a lot of superb artists left for Tumblr. As I primarily stick with deviantART, it is quite annoying.

  • Link

I don't nearly see as much "fetish" related things that I do at FA, but this is a furry site, or that's what it's become. Furries are going to post their fetishes it's what the fandom is known for unfortunately. The only time you're not going to see that on a site full of furries is when anything adult rated is banned. Tumblr has plenty of fetishes unless you're blocking them with tags.

Doesn't help that FA has fucked up alot at the beginning of this year and alot of artists have tried or are trying to move over here from that site. Some of them draw nothing but fetishes. It was going to happen at some point, the bigger the site got.

    • Link

I guess what has me down is that when this site was first created, it didn't appear like a furry site. It honestly looked like maybe how DA would have started out - "come one come all" type of thing. I guess I was just hoping for a better version of DA rather than a (better?) version of FA.

I definitely agree when I joined just a few months back to follow a few people who were thinking of jumping here from dA I thought this was a nice site that was starting to grow. Back then I even got a few comments here and there after deciding to post here and I genuinely thought this place would continue to grow into a nice small community.
While I think I've been lucky to be spared from the worst of it since I keep my rating filter at moderate I'm starting to think I won't be able to use this site as a secondary site to post art on. Every time I browse these days I end up blacklisting more and more tags which gets really annoying plus I have to click the offending images I'm trying to block just to see what tag I can block out..

I'm holding out hope maybe this site can be turned around, but I'm just about given up and only check my inbox for a couple people I follow only on here and not on other sites and for the rare fav/comment/follow I get on my own art. A real shame though cuz that means I'll again be stuck to solely dA for posting art. :c

    • Link

Today after learning about filters, I have applied 18 filters. Many of the images I clicked to see the tags didn't even have useful tags to block them with.
I don't so much mind the comments or faves, but it greatly matters to me the art I see. I used to be on CGHub before it died and that was a real shame. I never got one comment or favorite from anyone but I adored the art that was posted there. D:

      • Link

Yeah that's annoying I've bumped into a fair amount of those too ugh like at least tag your stuff if you're gonna post stuff like that which the rest of us could go without seeing?? I know other users are able to add tags but that is just really awkward and I'd never do it myself owo; Though if any brave soul out there does do that they definitely have my respect XD

I... don't know what to say. Other than filtering Adult/Explicit 18+, there's going to be a lot of fetish stuff on any art site that allows adult material. From what I've seen most folks that make explicit art don't want to have to be split across two sites.

I just upload everything I draw here since I can. On DA I can't (although they have wonderful double-standards on the subject) so I only upload what's allowed. Other than stricter enforcing of keywords and labels (which I think they do a fairly good job of already) I'm not sure there's much they can do other than prohibit /all/ adult artwork. At which point, well, they'll lose a lot of folks.

I really can't think of any way to make a site "fetish free" while allowing explicit adult art work, unless you're going to lay out in very specific terms what you do/don't consider fetish material and ban anything that falls under fetish.

    • Link

You make a really good point about the site allowing the explicit work. I switched my filter to 'Moderate' and added tags so I'll see if that helps out as far as browsing.
DA's double standards drive me nuts, and honestly I'd rather see drawn fetish work thank photo-porn under the guise of "artistic nude".
I honestly think it's OK to split work between sites, because then people that browse those sites - especially visitors - know what they're going to be looking at. I know that lots of people will post most of their work to DA, and then post more furry related work to here or FA. Just different types of galleries I guess, but if you don't mind it all in one place then that makes sense too - it's a preference.

      • Link

I agree. I don't mind splitting work across sites. But a lot of folks are looking for sites that allow adult art that are good. Hence a lot of refugees from FA (that hate IB because of... adult art of a specific type. Bleh)

FiIters aside, I no longer feel I can link potential clients or art friends to this site knowing theyre not furries and wouldn't understand the amount of fetish illustrations on the front page. I knew for a fact i wasnt linking anybody to fA and was hoping wA could have taken the place of dA. I've since taken this site off my business cards.

    • Link

That is understandable, and is one reason why I really only use DA on my business cards. If I could figure out a good simple way to link to my Facebook art page I'd do that one too

      • Link

I just post my FB link. Its really pretty easy of a URL structure. Want to see mine up close?

        • Link

Yes please! Because if anything at least I know that people who go to my Facebook page won't accidentally click a link to a face full of furry porn lol. Yikes.

          • Link

Check FB messenger, I sent a file to view

      • Link

I also read through a lot of that forum discussion. It really boils down to this. What does Weasyl want to be viewed as? It will either just be another furry porn site with a better interface, or will be a professionals art site. I'm stating that based on persecption by the public. U can call it something else till you're blue in the face but all those dongs on the front page is telling people its just a fancier FA.

        • Link

          The dongs do speak.

    Drawcrowd is certainly one of the better ones, I certainly cried when cghub went down ;w;

    • Link

I still am so sad about CGHub! And yep I have a profile on Drawcrowd and am slowly in the process of uploading my best stuff there. As of late I really enjoy getting kicked in the face with 'holy crap' amazing art lol. I need it x]

      • Link

        :)

      • Link

And a whole bunch of other sites too.

        • Link

Thanks for the links! I know there are a lot of sites, but CGHub consisted of the best of a specific type of art, which I loved and was greatly interested in because of my art career path. I'm not really into sites that mix photography and fine art and graphic art etc, where I have to sift through and pick out what I'm actually interested in. On CGHub I didn't have to filter, it was like the entire site consisted of artists that I would follow lol.
Drawcrowd is working out pretty well so far though. Also, I can only keep up with so many websites x]

        • Link

          Ah nice, thanks :)
