And I’m Australian, I’m gonna tell y’all about bilbies.

Bilbies are a medium to small omnivorous marsupials that live in the desert.

they are closely related to bandicoots.

There was two species of bilbies, but the lesser bilby has since gone extinct and the greater bilby is currently an endangered species.
Bilbies have lineage going back 15 million years the earliest species called Liyamayi dayi.

Bilbies are nocturnal and live in burrows which they dig themselves, it is for this reason they have backwards opening pouches, to keep dirt from getting inside. Unlike most other species of bandicoots, bilbies are extremely good at building burrows.

Bilbies have long muzzles with little sharp teeth, large long ears and a long tail. They have long sharp claws on their front paws for digging. They do not need to drink as they get all the water they need from their diet.

Bilbies are currently an endangered species. They’re under a lot of strain from many introduced species that either compete with them for food and territory (rabbits and rats) or that actively hunt and kill them (foxes and feral cats) and if we don’t help them, they’ll soon die out like the lesser bilby sub species.

The link at the top of this post is for the Save The Bilby Fund. Donating some money will help ensure these adorable animals live on to the future. Also, if you live in Australia, buying certain Easter Bilby chocolates instantly donates money to help protect these animals.
Please donate or spread the word!
