Not too long ago I stepped on a scale and was not all that happy with the number I spotted. I'd been okay with my weight as long as it didn't exceed a certain arbitrary number, and now I've gotten over that.

Before any of that I'd already started to try to be a little more healthy in an effort to just improve all around wellness.

I cut down my soda intake from 36 in a two week period to 4-6. I've reduced fruit juice and attempted to drink mostly water, some coffee. I eat a sandwich made of mozzarella cheese, olive oil, tomato, lettuce, and onion once a week. I'm trying to eat more fish and less snacks. No food after 10pm more or less.

Work snacks, I'm trying to replace potato chips with hummus chips. Rice cakes for something to eat instead, and are plantain chips healthy?

Sugar free things where I can find them, like pancake syrup and ice cream.

As for exercise, I walk to my car (1 mile) five days a week after work, and ride the exercise bike 2 miles daily. I've ordered a fancy scale to add to our workout area, and so far, that's that.

In terms of mental health, I'm still doing mostly okay. I'm thinking I may go back onto antidepressants and possibly give therapy a try. I never realized how often I'm in a low level stress pattern where my chest feels tight and so on. I don't like driving, for example. I do it to get where I need to go, but I am always nervous when doing it, especially if in a place I don't know. Anyone who's ridden in a car with me knows I don't do so well in unfamiliar places. Incidentally, I bought a GPS to help me in future trips, maybe that'll help some of the where the heck am I issues, but I just don't like driving. Never been a gearhead, or even someone who knows how half of the things in my car work.

So here's 2014, I guess it's just a quest for wellness for now.

Any suggestions?

    Dumping soda for water is probably the best thing you can do. I'm working on that again myself. x_x

      I can't make myself give it up completely, but I can make it a rare treat. It's probably how it should be. ;)

    I've lost 70 lbs in the last two years. A food journal helped me and tea. Lots of black tea.

          I've heard that mentioned, what does it do?

            Mild appetite suppressor, similar to coffee, but less harsh on the stomach. Also some studies say that black tea is also acts as an antidepressant. Depression and stress are know causes of weight gain.

              Really, an antidepressant... I could use those. I suffer from anxiety.

    If you have an iPhone, download the Pedometer++ app. If you don't have an iPhone, there are similar apps for other smartphones.

    You generally want to take 10,000 steps a day: http://blog.fitbit.com/the-magic-of-10000-steps/ Having a pedometer is a great way to track your walking activity.

    I could write pages of stuff I've read but I couldn't put together a bibliography of my sources. And what works for me may not work for you. I know you're actually a guy so that increases the odds of success with hard work. Testosterone is a key fat burner. Hence why women have trouble. You can literally cut out nicely just sitting on your ass if you have the right food in the cupboard and ration it out for daily consumption. You also should eat different things from the same groups in proportion with the rationing so your body doesn't get used to digesting the same thing every day. For me, my dad is in his 40s, eats junk and drinks beer. He's only got a medium sized gut. He's not big at all. I've got genetics on my side. Do you?

      I wouldn't know, I'm adopted. I never met my parents. As far as me, I'm trying to eat more fish and chicken.

        Fish is good for protein and your omega3 fatty acids which help brain and heart health. I recommend you stay away from bottom feeding fish and maybe even fish that aren't farm raised. As for chicken, go for it. But remember, they're fed with corn. Avoid the skin and don't use breading. Also bake or grill it. Don't fry it.
