Policy Update by Kannos

Since I am getting backlash for my policy of wanting to take partial payment upfront from people who have blank accounts with no history and are bidding on/buying my stuff as a means of preventing the scam issue that happened with drafthorse88 on Inkbunny, I am going to instead adopt another policy:

If you have a blank account and can not provide proof that you are a legitimate buyer, I will consider your bid on my auctions null and void and your bid will be removed. If you attempt to commission a regular piece, you will be denied outright.

Apparently I can't try to protect myself while still giving new accounts a chance without being deemed an asshole who's out to screw buyers, so I will have to just impose a flat out ban on 'new/unestablished users'. I'm sorry if any legitimately new users are affected by this, but there's nothing I can do and I am tired of getting drama for trying to protect myself, despite the fact that all if you guys have UNANIMOUSLY agreed and stated time and time again that this would be a fair way to protect myself. Unfortunately this will likely affect people who have an established presence on other places (FA, etc) who create a new account on Inkbunny or Weasyl solely to follow my work. To those of you, I'm sorry that you will be affected, but since I can't tell when an account is real, or an impostor, I have no choice but to play it this way.

So apparently people are upset with me for protecting myself, even though this new policy does NOT apply to 99.99% of the people I do business with, who are established and paying upon completion as per usual. So instead, I am simply going to deny service to anyone who is deemed questionable and who may be a flake.

people can get a little too entitled at times and forget that commissions are legitimate business service transactions and artists are trying to make an actual living and are not just there to provide one-sided fanservice

fuck 'em, kannos, do what you need to do :3

I hate how people think artsits are just disposable resources for their own convenience, and not individuals who actually work and deserve retribution and protection.

      Sorry for the typos.

So how about this, unless you've already thought about it....
Ask the users to make journals of Varifacation on their other galleries that point and link to all galleries. Just like I have o my front page; links to all of my galleries; so the info is consistent, and its pretty much proof I am who I claim to be.

I wholeheartedly endorse this new policy. It won't affect many users, and it's no different that what anyone running internet-based services apparently has to do these days. Don't let the drama from griefers get under your skin, either - blank account + drama = trolling in my book, and you are right to simply nullify any attempt to do business from those accounts.

I use the same policy in several services, and it's suited me fine, minimizing both wasted effort and unnecessary stress/negativity. Even something as simple as running a forum you have to "gate" the new users to make sure they are sincere. I guess people just love their (practical) anonymity and will abuse it, but won't go out of their way to make an effort building an actual profile unless they are sincere.

I also don't get why someone would think it's "fun" to commission someone like Kannos, see the pic so they know she's done the work and then bail. Even worse when there are multiple characters involved in the pic. Kannos is one of the few artists I know who has a cash-on-completion policy, which I like as a commissioner. But I agree she is totally within her rights to be suspicious of people she hasn't done business with before and even do things like make they pay a deposit (50% down?) or pay in full before starting.

I wasn't actively involved in the furry community for a long, long time so I had a pretty blank account at FA. But I also have a join date of 2005. Someone who creates an account within days (or hours) of bidding on something... now that's suspicious. Maybe they are legitimate, but since most artists are cash-up-front I don't think asking for money up front from someone like that is an unreasonable thing, you know?

It's just sad that these things happen to the people who are the most trusting (cash on complete). And then people wonder why nearly all artists want payment up front...

Forgive my ignorance here with this question, but does that mean that someone like myself, who packed up all the art from FA and moved here (thus having no real "presence" to speak of) won't be able to commission you in the future?

Sorry for the possibly stupid question, but I wanted to clear it up.

    • Link

Oh no, you're fine since you still have a verifiable presence somewhere. It doesn't need to be FA (they're not the end-all, be-all of furry art) but as long as someone seems reputable, things are ok. It's more for people who have very new accounts that seem to be created JUST for the purpose of bidding/buying something, with no history or way to verify that they are who they say they are. Also, let's say you are established here on Weasyl. If someone approached me on another website with an account with your same (or very similar) name, same icon, but the account is brand new and blank, I would be suspicious. I would make an attempt to contact you on Weasyl to confirm that it is indeed the same person and not someone just pretending to be you and thus using your reputation to screw others over.

I hope all that makes sense!

Yeah it makes sense. Thanks for clarifying it for me.

I'm upset at you for accepting my commission and waiting over 6 months to do it when you said you'd start it in a few days and accept new commissions on top of it. Kind of makes me feel pretty shit especially since I'm friends with Utunu and I would think you'd want to make a good impression with me.

    Guess not.

      Passive aggressive much?

        Fine. See below.

You weren't charged anything, as I don't ask for payment upfront, so I reserve the right to restructure my queue, move things around, etc as needed at any time based upon either A) available time I have or B) inspiration. You've been the only one who's complained about it. Also, who you are or aren't friends with has nothing to do with your place in the queue as I don't play favors with anyone just because of who they know. I'm not fond of favoritism so I don't practice it when I deal with my queue. I tend to work and open for slots based on my current financial needs and my inspiration. Considering that I don't accept payment until the work is done, I reserve all rights to work in whatever order I feel is most productive and will produce the best quality work.

      • Link

        So that makes lying okay?

Remove me from your damn "queue"

How's that for being passive aggressive?

        • Link

If you haven't paid then you really don't have much right to complain. I understand why Kannos does commissions like this, I structured mine like this as well for a while. It has a lot to do with stress, inspiration/muse, and outside real life events. You just sound like an over-entitled "customer".

If it's that big a deal, just commission someone else.

        • Link

Exactly what Nuka said. I do things this way because it allows me to work based on inspiration and, if I need to take time off, I can do so without any headaches. I didn't lie to you, as I never gave a guarantee that I'd do it on a specific date from the beginning. I had tentatively scheduled it with a group of others in my queue, but things came up and I had to reshuffle it. It's not the first time I've reshuffled things, or had things I planned to finish in one week get moved over to another time slot.

I have college classes to tend to. I have a relationship that practically classifies as long distance due to how much time we spend apart because of his job. I have family and pets to take care of. At any given time, my schedule may get shuffled to allow me to tend to any of these things. This is why I don't charge upfront; I like having the flexibility to adjust my schedule without people reacting the way you are right now.
