I got a certified letter in the mail yesterday, which had me curious. It wasn't addressed to me, but "current occupant." I have been getting collections calls for some dude that had my number before, and I thought maybe this was the same thing. So, I open it up, and find it's a Writ of Garnishment, and that I am now a Garnishee.

Um.. What?

Something about owing March and April rent. Some figure for $11,400. What the actual fuck?

So, after having a mini panic attack, I give it a thorough reading, and no, it's not bad news for me. Apparently my landlord tried suing someone (as the case info lists him as the Plantiff), and lost in an epic way. Finally someone nailed his ass. So, since my landlord owes over $11k, ALL rent money coming into him is being garnished to pay the debt.

What does that mean for me? I'm legally required to pay my rent to the Defendant's lawyer and to give my landlord a receipt showing proof of payment. But you know what? I've had enough with my landlord's illegal activity. So, I drafted up a 30 day notice for termination of our tenancy, since we're on a month-to-month lease. Fuck this noise lol.

BUT, that means the plans for the Ohio move have been accelerated. I was planning on staying in Oregon until the end of April to give me more time to save up money and get two months of rent and bills set aside and to give Kat some of my tips to help her move, but I'll have to make due with one month's supplies and hope I find a job in time.

DarkEmberKitty hasn't secured a place yet, which kind of worries me. I don't want to leave her stranded here. But, at least she does have some income from unemployment to survive on.
