I have been watching a lot of "let's play" videos recently. These are videos of people playing video games with them giving commentary. In perspective, I find it odd how popular these have become.
I now consider let's plays to be the Internet's equivalent of reality shows. They are cheap to produce and have a fairly low engagement level. I complain sometimes that I don't have the time to watch exciting shows like breaking bad, yet seem to find plenty of time to watch or listen to let's plays in the background while doing something else. I guess I do not always want something so engrossing that it requires my full attention. They do not require knowledge of previous episodes to enjoy current ones and you can even leave the room for ten minutes and still enjoy it when you come back.
I am much less judgmental of reality shows now.
