Gonna talk about Blueberries. (and low-carb dieting.) by BlueNire

Blueberries are the shit.
("shit"=moderate rating)

No, I'm serious hearmeout.

REAL blueberries are just... When you eat them, most of them have this bright tarty-sweet little flavor with a tiny (teeny tiny) bit of that "artificial blueberry flavoring" at the very end.

The flavor of them changes dramatically (as far as I can tell) depending on the size of the blueberry.
The smaller, the tarter "brighter" and the larger. the smoother "mellow/creamy" flavor they take on.

So you have this like...fun little flavor adventure with all the different sizes of the little things.

The weird thing I've discovered is that the "blueberry flavor" that you find in every artificial-flavoring-ever, is ONLY the flavor they take on when they're cooked!
So....which is terribly sad because I find them terribly complicated and their tiny little after-taste is only a fragment of their complex flavor.

...........
............... Soooo. I'm on a low-carb, high-fat diet.

And blueberries are the sex. (I can't have very many other fruits because of carb content.)

.....................

Also weird thing about being on this diet is my flavor-palette has changed.

I sometimes "cheat". I'm not proud but... I do. (also- having a carb "dish" often breaks my plateaus. It's weird).

AAAND- I've noticed.... Cheap dessert tastes like crap.
I had a Sonic red-velvet cake-thing for my cheat-treat and.. It was........
Like the ice-cream tasted like sugar-plastic. The syrup tasted like...super-tart, chemical-sugar and the only thing that tasted good was the weird cheese-cake-mouse that was on there.
Needless to say it made me a tad sad. (Because I can only have one of these "treats" about once every 3 weeks.

Now.

Compared to the bread pudding I got from a restaurant called "hollies".. UGHN!
The dark chocolate was like...amazing and like herb-ally,-earthy and the bread pudding was soft and buttery and lovely and fluffy and....mmmmmmm It was worth it.

Oh yeah, I've lost 20 more pounds....

I haven't decided if I want to continue though.

I've been reading a lot of "love yourself" type literature which more and more is telling me that, no matter what weight I am, I will always be a sad panda if I can't just...try to coexist with myself as I am.

Also, I already knew this, but skinny girls get picked on too.

You can't escape the people who will pick on you because they will pick on you no matter what you look like.

And...all that matters are how you feel about yourself.
The good people, or rather, the people who are good FOR you, will love you and like you no matter what your body looks like.

So.

I'm really not sure if I'll stay on it.
I mean.. it's WORKING and I feel good, and not hungry ever and that's amazing and wonderful... (also I TASTE THINGS!!)
but..All this is just another way to channel my food-obsession/OCD and I should just..

BE happy.

Be HAPPY.

Not because I lose weight and suddenly gain "permission from society" to be happy.

Because society wants me to believe that "only skinny girls can be happy and pretty and worthy" which..

I know that's not true.
I know several (kind and wonderful) skinny girls who are absolutely miserable.

Sad... so sad.

Ah well.

I remember someone asking for a "diet" update" and I felt it's been enough time to post one.

BLUEBERRIES ARE THE SHIT!.

Gonna talk about Blueberries. (and low-carb dieting.)

I KNOW!! OH MY GOSH THEY ARE JUST WONDERFUL LITTLE THINGS!!
I was just..surprised that I only discovered this at my age. XD

I use to love the blueberries, and then my grandmother decides to grow them. Now i have an intense dislike for them. After learning there is no such things as a fully picked over blueberry bush i just cant look at them without feeling hot and in pain. :( but if you are ever looking for some and i can send you some i will gladly pick some for you over the summer when i am at my grandmother's house. She has like 12 brushes of them. 4 of them are about 5 feet tall.

    • Link

      AH! YOu poor dear!
      I totally understand.
I used to love talapia until my mother one time did this weird "ralapia diet?" thing and all we ever ate (well protein source) was talapia. NOW I HATE TALAPIA! I won't even look at it uuugh!
Also, that would be AMAAAAZING to get real blue berries so close to the source!! I wouldn't want to torture you though!! HAHA!
I've only had grocery-store blue berries so far XD... I wonder how you'd ship them...hmm..
If you really are serious, how much would you/your grandmother charge? :D Just curious! (Extra money is fun yeah??:D )

      • Link

Really unsure she gives them away mostly i think the cost would be in shipping as i have no idea how to ship food lol

    COULDN'T AGREE MORE!

I grew up on them in Maine. Where I lived (knox county) we had a blueberry festival, I worked a few blueberry fields as a kid (before they stopped letting that happen LOL) and gastronomically, I've always loved using them in recipes and of coarse snacking.

One of my favorite things we used to do with them was make that weird yankee drink, the egg cream. SUPER EASY AND DELISH drink/treat that sounds gross, but that's because it's named way wrong.
Get blueberry juice (any fruit juice/flavoring works), heavy cream and soda water (just carbonated, nothing funky). Put about a tablespoon or two of the juice in a cup with about the same amount of heavy cream (Depends on the size of the cup! You'll figure out the ratio as you go). then, holding a spoon upside down (back side up) over the cup, SLOWLY add soda water until the cup is almost full. Go too fast and it could foam everywhere, gently mix with said spoon, enjoy!

It'll sound weird at first, but when you realize you've just made a REAL cream soda, that is actually delish and flavored the way you want, it just makes it better :D
I've also been tempted to find a vegan/vegiterian substitute for heavy cream that still works but no dice so far lol. Soy or rice milk would be ideal but I've never had it come out right for me.

Vanilla, chocolate, and any other basic ice cream flavors go well with this since it tastes about like a cream soda. I used to toss in malt powder (New England thing) to add a flavor kick as well :3
Can ya tell I worked in an ice cream shop a few years back? haha

MAINE!! I've always fantasized about living there!! Gosh :D NEAT! Thank you for sharing your story! You just sound like a really interesting person! I also think it's interesting that even having worked picking blueberries that you aren't tired of them!

THAT RECIPE SOUNDS AMAZING! I'll have to try it out! I can have heavy creams and soda-water, and I can have fresh non-sugar blueberry juice so next time I head to the store, I am totally going to try this!

Also-You worked in an ice-cream shop?! HOW CHARMING AND DELIGHTFUL IS THAT?! HA! So neat! :D
Thank you so much for replying and sharing! Your reply was a really fun/nice read!! Thank youuu!! :D

      • Link

Yes, the great mighty Maine haha. I miss being there, I live in Kentucky now.

I will say on that recipe (now that I looked at it again) a good ratio of cream & flavor to soda is like 1/3 of the cup your using the cream and flavor, the other two soda water, but messing about with amounts helps a lot and you'll figure out how you like it best :D

The place I worked at was an ice cream shop that made pizza and sandwiches as well. It was an awesome place to work, great atmosphere, kinda wish I could have kept that job, I loved that place haha!

    20lbs?!!
Jealous. Its so much harder for us gurls to lose weight

    • Link

      Thank you, Misskin!
You're sOOO RIGHT!! I get so jealous sometimes. My mate (male) can just cut out sodas and lose 50+ pound,s and I had to eat under 1000 calories to lose a pound a month in the past!!
      Just crazy stuff!

Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and salmonberries, oh my!

  • Link

Frozen blueberries are amazing!!!! It's like little bites of heaven.

Congrats on loosing the 20lbs! That's no small feat.

It's really sad how no matter what, some people will always find something to pick on. And it's true, it's important to have people around you that are good to you. Because you are a great person.

Frozen blueberries are amazing!!!! It's like little bites of heaven.

...~~~!!! FROZEN BLUE BERRIES! Why have I not thought of this!! I just get the fresh ones (that I have to eat fast) and they go bad. YOU ARE A GENIUS.

Congrats on loosing the 20lbs! That's no small feat.

:bows:: THANK YOU! I...can't see it haha! But I can see it on the scale so! It's still neat really! Especially since my breakfast is eggs and bacon XD (CRAZY, I know!)

It's really sad how no matter what, some people will always find something to pick on. And it's true, it's important to have people around you that are good to you. Because you are a great person.

It IS sad. It is REALLY REALLY sad and true. My sister is a very thin person and people would hate her for being thin! So ...just gotta know you can't make everyone happy, no matter that you do.

Also thank you dear, I think you're pretty awesome yourself. I hope you have people around who are good to you and for you as well!
      I hope you're doing alright :)
      Thank you for the reply!

      • Link

Yup, frozen blueberries. I buy them fresh and usually freeze half of them (or all in the summer).

It definitely takes time to show. My mom just got to the 10 pound mark and she's super excited for when her pants are too big for her.

Yeah. And yet some people expect us women to make them happy...
        Thanks.

My own weight loss experience has led to me loving myself a lot more independently of what society feels is acceptable, because losing the ~50lbs I've dropped so far has made it easier for me to be physically active, stop having trouble with breathing, and fit into clothes that are of a sane size for someone of my (short) stature. Going to the gym has increased my self-confidence quite a bit. My weight-related medical issues have all but disappeared. Also, buying new clothes is fun!

Weight loss will not magically make you love yourself, but it will make you much healthier, and will put you into a better frame of mind for learning to love yourself. You are absolutely correct that the people who matter will love you regardless of what your weight is, but the idea that 'all that matters are how you feel about yourself' is in my opinion destructive, because I felt that way for a long time and fooled myself into believing I was okay with being the weight that I was, because it was on the inside that mattered. While not untrue, this made me complacent with my terrible physical state and caused stagnation that has allowed my weight to wreak havoc on my body.

TL;DR Of course you should endeavor to be happy with who you are, but you should also make sure your body is healthy enough to stick around to love.

    • Link

Thank you for your reply and CONGRATULATIONS! -50lbs That is no small endeavor! That's amazing!

I understand what you're saying...and I"m happy that you're in a better place that makes you more comfortable in your own body. Not very many people can say that! :)

      I just...
I gotta tell the whole story I guess- I've been 130lbs and I've been 300+lbs and I wasn't happy EITHER way. (proof https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11306549/Stuff/thin.jpg)

I mean, when I was skinny I liked how people treated me, but hated that I was starving and so OCD about calories that I'd throw up if I went over my calories and I fainted a lot... (It was a mess.)

Which tells me that I probably have body dysphoria to a degree and I'll have to be mindful of that in the future.

So as far as learning to love myself making me complacent, that'll probably never honestly happen for me (specifically) XD (Even though I talk a good "love thyself" game.)

Also, the whole " be healthy to live longer" just isn't a motivator that works for me in particular because I have no children ( and won't) and my mate eats 10-billion times worse than I ever have. Ever.

      Ah, well..

Honestly, I think I probably will stick with the ketogenic diet long term-anyway because, out of all the diets I have been on (I've been on lots low-cal, slim-fast, weight watchers, jenny craig,-even gaining terribly eating disorders like binging=and-purging, bulimia, and taking lots of laxatives), this is by far the one that I feel can be sustained for the rest of my life. It's a very comfortable diet. I mentally feel great. :) Plus blue berries are the shiy, now. So that's good, yeah?

Also- I hate to be that guy, but I have known people who are overweight ( NOT OBESE) but just a bit overweight who are super-healthier than anyone I've ever met. (They eat all the healthy things and they're active.) So, in my opinion, to me health does not necessarily equal weight. I mean...underweight people have a higher mortality rate than overweight people ( again-not obese, but overweight).. Hell, normal weighted people who eat crap can be unhealthy too. (Like my brother-in-law: eats crap-sick all the time- super tiny and skinny.)::shrugs::

I know this isn't a popular opinion but...there it is.

Thank you again for your reply and AGAIN- CONGRATS on the weight loss :)

      • Link

I have heard good things about keto. I don't do straight-up keto myself though I do generally go extremely low-carb just on principle.

As for the rest, I don't know what to tell you. People can be overweight and healthy, but it will eventually catch up to you. Weight has a huge effect not just on longevity but on quality of life, so I can do nothing but offer you the best of luck in finding a healthy, reasonable weight for yourself that you are comfortable with and that isn't itself a symptom, which is something I myself am trying to avoid. For what it is worth, I have been on a 'break' for the last 6-8 months to just let myself exist without being on a strict food regimen, and what I learned was that I engineered my weight loss routine in such a way that I now eat very, very differently. After eight months of essentially eating as I pleased with no tracking, I haven't gained anything back. I have retrained my food habits and am now ready for the last 40lbs to come off, which is what I'm in the process of doing. :)

        Good luck, and best wishes!

" finding a healthy, reasonable weight for yourself that you are comfortable with and that isn't itself a symptom, "

          THIS!
THIS SO MUCH THIS!! THIS IS SO WISE YES! Absolutely, Blick. This phrase you said is amazing and everyone should hear it.

Seriously though, that's what I am seeking, and I thank you for being able to articulate it waaaay better than I ever could!

I"m also super happy that it sounds like some of your habits you developed ( healthy habits) are sticking and you've sustained! THAT is amazing and a goal I think everyone should strive for! IT's just hard learning and sticking to good habits if you have really bad ones so, awesome, you're awesome!

I wish you the best always and good luck and keep on doing what you're doing! It's very inspiring and I hope to get to a similar place! :D

Bigger blueberries are from more mature plants (anywhere from 5-9 years), and the smaller ones from plants that have just started producing fruit, so the bigger ones are definitely more full of flavor. I know what you're talking about when it comes to that 'artificial' after flavor though, hence why blueberry pie isn't one of my favorites. >:

I've been on a 'low-carb-high-fat' diet pretty much by my own choosing for the past 6 months. I still occasionally eat bread for breakfast or in a sandwich for lunch, but typically I eat lots of eggs, meat, leafy greens, certain fruit (apples, pears, berries and bananas. I know those aren't low-carb, but they're high-everything-else-nutritious), nuts and seeds. I don't need to really lose any weight (maybe 15-20 pounds max), I'm mostly doing it for the sake of my health. Since I've learned to make 90% of my own meals quickly, easily and make them taste amazing with fresh, local and organic ingredients it's easier and a LOT cheaper to do that than to eat out or even get fast food. Although, the temptation to do so is still very strong in me.

With that said, you should really do it for yourself and not for other people. If you're happy with what you're doing, and more importantly enjoying the food you're eating and finding a way to be happy and healthier, then more power to you! :) It's okay to cheat once in a while, it's just important to remember that some foods out there have ingredients our bodies are not used to, and processed foods should be avoided if possible (this, however, gets very expensive unless you cultivate your own food).

I wish you luck and happiness. I LOVE food too, I'm just trying to learn to love things I didn't really before (tomatoes, sweet potatos, mustard, and so on) since I know they'll love me back, and avoid things I know are bad for me (dairy because i'm intolerant but omg cheese, processed foods, GMO).

WHOA! That's really interesting! WOW Where'd you learn all that?! :D Yeah, I could live without cooked blue berries, but I adore the fresh ones :D

Wow cool! That sounds like a bit like the "Paleo" diet to me :) Especially with the avoiding dairy and taking in more fruits!
I've heard only good things about it and I've told myself that once I get to my goal weight, I'll get off my ketogenic diet and transition to the Paleo one (which sounds very similar to your diet :) )
I'm just doing the ketogenic one because my insulin resistance is out of control but that should even out after a year or so. :)

I love food as well! I'm really happy about my taste-buds changing because I know before, I couldn't appreciate say, a blueberry :)

I wish you all the luck in the world and it's neat meeting a fellow low-carb-high-fat dieter!! :D -highfives- I don't meet too many others who are doing this too, so that's really awesome!

The blueberry thing, I saw a video of some guy on youtube comparing 2 different plants; the older one had big fat juicy blueberries, the other younger plant they were smaller and paler in color. I can't find the video anymore though x: Looking closer it sounds like the acidity of the soil and nutrient also factors into it, like most plants.

Yup, we (my boyfriend, room mate and I) tried to go full-paleo for about 30 days and did really well, it helped make a lot of other changes to our diet: we cook more, we never eat cereal, and I only drink water, tea, coffee, almond/coconut milk or orange juice, but we cheat and have beer sometimes. Though once you find things you like and are comfortable eating and making, it gets easier the longer you work on it. We've started to eat grains here and there again, but we make it things like quinoa. sourdough bread, wild rice and Boom Chicka Pop popcorn. http://angiespopcorn.com/

Dairy was hard for me to give up since I grew up drinking dairy milk, eating cheese in almost every meal, but then after I stopped eating it I never felt sick or bloated like I did practically every day. I can handle small amounts just to satisfy the craving, but if cooking calls for milk I switch it out with what I can, or if it calls for butter I use coconut oil instead. Just small switches like that mean big changes on your health. :D I always thought I was a picky eater, but yeah just trying things over and over, getting used to it and knowing it's helping your body is the best way to grow a taste for it. Once you try and eat something processed after making your palette more accepting of 'whole foods,' you can really taste the difference.

I find a LOT of information on, of all places, reddit for dieting tips and helpful ideas/recipes. http://www.reddit.com/r/Paleo/ I also go on Pinterest to get some recipes, or you know, whatever is recommended by the wizard Google.

Damn now I want some blueberries. x)
I usually don't pay attention at them at all, as in, on eating them, because they grow here everywhere in the wild just like lingonberries and raspberries, but now that you mentioned them in the middle of a winter; I WANT SOME.
