John K really does suck now. by Lynchenberg

I've never been one for band-wagon bashing. I'm the sort of guy whose still proud to say he likes M Night Shyamalan and Stephen King and other creative people it's cool to sneer at. And for the longest time, I assumed it was a similar deal with John K, that he was just a dick to people and hard to work with, so people said he was a horrible artist, regardless of how well he did or didn't draw. I never watched Ren and Stimpy growing up (it didn't air on the networks I watched in Canada) so I didn't see it until I was an adult, and even then I wasn't a big watcher. But I thought the art was fine, and what little I'd see of John K's stuff outside of Ren and Stimpy looked good too, stuff he did for Ralph Bakshi's Mighty Mouse cartoon and such. I never really looked at his blog because he wasn't one of my cartooning heroes, having not grown up with his stuff, so I assumed all this time that he pretty much still drew now the way he did back in the Mighty Mouse/Ren and Stimpy days. Then I happened across these.

I have to admit I was wrong, these lack any kind of structure or appeal. They don't even look good in a horror or avant-garde kind of way, they're just poorly done. They look what I doodle in five seconds in my note books when I'm bored during note taking in a class. My apologies to everyone who I defended John K to, he really is as terrible as they say.

John K really does suck now.

That literally looks like he did it in a few seconds, tho. He's a supreme dick, and a super opinionated my-way-or-the-highway kind of jerk, but the stuff he puts effort and time into looks way the hell better that that.

I wouldn't cast him off based on those two drawings. I'd cast him off for other reasons. :P Even still, i find his best work super-duper appealing, way more than a lot of big-leagues cartooning that's being done these days.

Even more useful is his historical analysis, when he digs through the old old OLD animations and breaks down what about their stuff was appealing. He's probably more useful as a teacher than an actual cartoonist these days, if you can stand his personality and misogyny, etc.

Maybe I'm biased since people have been telling me he's horrible for years now and this is the only recent art I've seen by him in at least a year.

Hey, there's no accounting for taste. You're allowed to hate the guy and his art. <3 I don't want to defend him TOO much -- he is sill a dishrag.

I actually don't care if he's a dirtbag or not. For one, I don't know him personally, so I can't really judge him as a human being, and two, even if he is a complete piece of scum, it doesn't affect how good or bad his art is. Salvador was by all accounts even worse than John K (he went to a party with his wife dressed a baby who was recently kidnapped and his wife as the kidnapper and presented themselves to the mother,) but he's still one of my favourite artists because he's insanely good. I believe in separating the artist from the art.

That's pretty much what I was trying to get at, though I think my phrasing got in the way. I appreciate the thoughts though!

Yeah, it's not that good, but what was the purpose behind the drawings? It could have been daily sketches or something to get the creative and humorous juices flowing, ya know?

  • Link

just look like quick sketches to me.

I guess it depends if these are all he's doing now or not.

If I were to draw that, I would make it look terrible because I was making fun of her. Why should I make it look good when I don't like her?

    • Link

He drew them 'cause he's working with her on something.
