Thoughts on Tonight... by Dalan

So for those of you in the skeptical/rational/atheist community, you know that tonight is a bit of a big night. Tonight, on Livestream, Creationist Ken Ham is squaring off in a debate against Bill Nye the Science Guy.

The cynics have already pegged this as nothing more than a cash grab for Ham's company, Answers in Genesis, so he can finally realize his dream of building a scale model of the ark and turn it into some kind of theme park. It's hard to disagree with those folks, mostly because the bill reads like an old WWE ticket designed by Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan.

The 'debate' will be taking place at the Creation Museum in Kentucky, and will be packed with a bunch of like-minded creationists. To use a biblical reference, Bill is walking into the lion den.

In the atheist community, there are a host of mixed feelings about this. Some folks say 'IT'S A TRAP!' and fear Bill will go down in flames. Others say Ken Ham is gonna choke worse than the Broncos when Bill whips out his science on the man some people have referred to as 'The missing link to Amish Wolverine.'

My thoughts? I'm a little on the fence. I'd like Bill to crush this uppity asshole, but I"m not entirely sure if he's got the chops to do it. Ken's a professional swindler...a charlatan of the highest order. He's amassed quite the following with his whole young earth creationist movement to the point that if things keep going the way they are, a good chunk of the US is going to choke on its own ignorance.

Regardless of how the debate turns out though, a lot of things won't change. Science sure as hell won't; the natural law of the universe won't bend just because Ken Ham says so. Atheists will still trudge onward, spreading rationality and realism to the masses, and YouTube will still be filled with crackpots from both sides of the argument, steadfast in their beliefs that shouting profanity at the top of their lungs is the best way to get their point across.

I think the only thing that will really change is that the creationist movement will finally be fully dragged out in front of the world for all to see. I'm hoping the reaction is one of laughter at the absurdity of it all. Creationists are a laughingstock and deserve nothing but ridicule on a global scale. Washed up child actors like Kirk Cameron should have just sunk their dwindling fortunes into getting the rest of the 'Left Behind' books turned into movies; it would have been a better career move.

If Bill accomplishes one thing, it's not to 'legitimize' creationism via a debate, it's to expose the world to this rotten intellectual blemish on society. For that, I wish him the best.

Oh, and in case you haven't figured out who I'm rooting for in this whole thing:

BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL!

If I recall, Bill Nye is a harsh man when not doing a show geared toward young people and students. I think when the gloves come off, Bill will be able to dish out some feisty science fact.

I hope he does. I'd love to see this Amish Wolverine put in his place once and for all.

For what it's worth: We talked about the debate during the most recent 'Holy CRAP!' Thought you might like to hear our thoughts about it. Personally, I'm hoping for something so far out of left field that NO ONE saw it coming! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&list=PL01Jw0C2WtQt_LhZJeGphNl1R1kpojALC&v=Zn7QXBM-_5w#t=4224

Having heard and seen the show now, if it's possible I'd love to be involved in it at some point. Looks like it could be fun :)
