how, when an artist starts getting really popular, all of a sudden you see all these other people's art styles starting to become more and more like (popular person's)
like, legitimately I don't even think it's a bad thing for people to emulate art styles they like as they're experimenting with drawing, it's just really fascinating to see this weird like... evolution? People using similar lines/colors and even compositions
anyways people LINK ME to music you've been rocking out to lately!! I need some new musics pretty badly urgh
I am pretty open tbh! My favorite bands of all time are Protomen, Scissor Sisters, Elbow, and Fleet Foxes... not a big fan of rap or country but otherwise most anything goes hahah
Well here's a favorite of mine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbvLHWRVkyY
LMAO yeah it's so true. I know a popular artist and it's HILARIOUS because I often see people who have obviously emulated their style. (I mean, I've learned from their art too, but in a less BLATANT RIP OFF kind of way. I hope?)
And. UH. What kind of music do you like? :3
omg scissor sisters yes.
my brother had me listen to this one earlier:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8QhjXcmV7Q
otherwise i've been doing old music xD;
I totally know what you're talking about. It's like a style turns really popular and in along with that person.
I think when people are friends, and do things like paint chat or tegaki/art RP together that it kinda results in that sorta thing too...
But it is really bizarre!
As far as music goes, I really like this song right now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqJkOW5ipkE
I emulate my favorite artists techniques sometimes, but the work is all mine. I've even told them they're the ones I look up to and they're 100% okay with it, and a few were shocked and flattered. (▰˘◡˘▰)
Honestly I think it's a good thing to study and practice the techniques of others, especially if it helps you grow and learn as an artist. I don't think I've ever flat out copied another person's style though. Tracing and claiming as an original work though is a megahuge nopezone for me.
Tracing to learn is one thing, as in privately as in for practice as in NOT taking credit for another artist's work is entirely another.
my latest songcraze
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmypOLoynCM
it's definitely a good thing to study and practice imo too, I went through a long phase where entire pages of my sketchbooks were faces eyeballed from those of artists I like (particularly Kevin Wada) because I was trying to figure out how the f faces worked at that point @_@
I'll always encourage copying for practice's sake, it's only when people claim the art as purely original that it ruffles my feathers, hahah.
and I love mystery skulls!! My favorite recently has been "Ghost", SO good
Money and Ghost are my two faves!! Haha
If you like mashups: this one
and this one (this is snoop dogg though, idk how you feel about rap but it's a good mix) are pretty good. I listen to literally anything though, not picky at all so long as it sounds good/isn't super repetitive.
And this one cracks me up every time: another rap song BUT JUST CLICK YOU WON'T REGRET
I love the concept of mashups but a lot of them just don't mesh well for me?? That said, have you heard Little Wrecking Ball (Miley Cyrus / Mumford & Sons)??!? It's ridiculously amazing.
I will always hype Nightwish whenever I can.

Just a few of my personal favorite albums they've made.
People learn by observation and imitation. And when an artist is popular people tend to take note of their technique more often. It's the nature of the beast that is called Humanity.
As for music I've been rocking to lately, here's a few links...

Did i hear someone looking for tunes?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZ44x0GnKh4&feature=youtube_gdata_player this is a creepy version of one upon a dream and I love it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qrGOi41iwE&feature=youtube_gdata_player I love this song and the video is really neat
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUMiEkMjtOQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player it's really folk, but it is a gem :)
If you're looking for some relaxing instrumental music, I also suggest you look up the Flower OST, it's cheery and calming uvu
OKAY I AM DONE CARRY ON
aRE YOU PSYCHIC? I swear literally all 3 of these songs I heard for the first time like... this week. @_@
and I love the Flower OST! Really anything Austin Wintory does is just beautiful and melodic ;w; of course the Journey OST is my fav from him so far
Regarding the art, I totally notice that, but I don't think it's malicious or anything. The couple of times I tried to get myself to learn drawing, I was totally starting by emulating people I liked. I think a lot of people start off emulating in any art and then as they grow more confident branch out in their own way. So the New Hotness tends to have a lot of imitators (I guess you could call 'em, though I guess I'd go more for like, uh, wanna apprentices?) among the people who haven't established their own niche yet.
AAAH MUSIC STUFF. Prepare for songdumping.
Sooo I saw your list of favourite bands and I'll try to keep them in mind but I'll be honest, I'mma mostly just listen to the stuff I listen to since I'm not familiar enough with most of your bands (I know, like, one Scissor Sisters song, a couple of Protomen videogame covers, and that's it) to make an educated guess. So here's some people I like with a couple of representative songs for them.
Female-fronted bands / Female vocalists
I am so in love with Florence + the Machine it's not even funny. No Light, No Light and Shake it Out are a couple of their good ones.
Imogen Heap is pretty amazing. Hide and Seek and Let Go
Janelle Monae does some awesome sort of R&B-ish stuff. Dance Apocalyptic and Q.U.E.E.N..
Melissa Ferrick is a sort of rock-folk type in the Melissa Ethridge-before-she-became-soft-rock sort of vein. Freedom and Win 'Em Over (Bonus song: Drive is one of the sexiest songs I've heard)
Poe is sort of rock...ish? I don't know what to call Poe. Control and Not a Virgin.
Everything but the Girl is sort of moody smooth music. Missing and Rollercoaster.
Cover bands and/or A Capella
Boyce Avenue does some really nice sort of unplugged, low-key covers. The lead singers has a good voice (and is also stupidly pretty not fair). Shadow of the Day (Linkin Park and 4 Minutes (Justin Timberlake/Madonna).
Pentatonix is a ridiculously talented 5-person a capella group. Daft Punk medley and Somebody that I used to Know (Gotye cover).
Penn Masala is one of the few college a capella groups that doesn't sound like every other college a capella group. They mix American pop music with Indian music for an amazing effect. Fix You/Ishq Bina and Lovestoned / Ya Ali.
Videogame music and/or Instrumental
Bastion has a beautiful soundtrack. You can listen to the whole thing for free here. I have a hard time picking instrumental tracks from it to point out, they're all good. Maybe Terminal March?
Dust: An Elysian Tail also has a beautiful soundtrack that can be listened to for free here. I suggest Abadis Forest and Cirromon Caverns.
Lindey Sterling is a talented violinist who also does a bunch of videogame covers. Radioactive (with Pentatonix) and Zelda Medley.
Afro-Celt Sound System does some really amazing instrumental stuff. Lovers of Light and Whirl-Y-Reel 2.
Other
MIKA is sort of light pop. Lollipop (awesome music video btw) and Happy Ending.
OHMYGOD that's probably enough. Sorry, I super love getting to go "LISTEN TO THIIIIIIS" about music with people.
YAY SONGDUMPS ;w; thanks so much!!! eee, all really really good recs too
I love Florence + the Machine! My personal favs are "Howl" and "Drumming". Imogen Heap I'd only heard in passing before but those songs were very nice (even though the beginning of "Hide and Seek" made me laugh really hard... it's probably just early in the morning, but when she sings "what the hell" I just cracked up). One of my bff's is CRAZY about Janelle Monae so I definitely know her music too, "Q.U.E.E.N." is so so good ♥‿♥
The other lady vocalists you recommended are super good to, I esp liked Poe!
You're totally right about the lead of Boyce Avenue being WAY too pretty >_> I've seen Pentatonix's cover/mash-up of Daft Punk before, super good stuff. I also have the Bastion ost (so good!) but never heard the Dust one before, IT'S EXCELLENT??? JESUS so good I'm having a crazy eargasm over here nhnhnnnhg
WHENEVER you wanna throw music at me please feel free because I HUNGER FOR TUNES.... @_@ lol. Thanks so much again, good stuff!!
AAAH I'm so glad you liked them I was worried I was over-dumping (yes that's a word I just made it).
I only discovered F+tM like two years ago? A friend played me "No Light, No Light" and "Rabbit Heart" and I was in love. I came back and told all my friends "OH MY GOD HAVE YOU HEARD OF THIS BAND" and it turned out "Dog Days" had been on the radio for, like, six months and I was actually the last person ever to hear of them. Whoops.
Imogen Heap is pretty awesome. Come Here Boy and Have You Got It In You are a couple other good ones by her. She also had a band, Frou Frou, for awhile (Oops, looks like "Let Go" that I linked to earlier was by Frou Frou not one of her solo things, ah well), and a lot of their stuff is great too.
I heart Janelle Monae a lot. Not all of her music does it for me, but I respect the talent for the stuff I don't like and she is just so badass and wears the coolest suits all the time and aagh. <3
I really adore Poe. She's basically off the map in terms of new stuff (after her second album there was a protracted legal battle with her old record label about who owned her music and I kinda get the feeling that burned her out), but both her self-titled album and Haunted are really good. I particularly love the latter; it's interesting, too, because it functions as a soundtrack for her brother's (really good) book, House of Leaves. As in, the liner notes of the album reference specific page numbers that each song references and/or is based on, and there's direct quotes traded back and forth between album and book. It's kinda awesome.
Someone I was chatting with (Maybe Ritts?) had a picture of them hanging out with Boyce Avenue and I was just ugh no fair you got to see the pretty up close.
I KNOW RIGHT about the Dust soundtrack?! If you haven't played Dust I'd actually really recommend it, it's a really fun 2D Metroidvania sort of game that was (incredibly) made entirely by one guy other than music and voice acting. I had a ton of fun with it, and it's on Steam and a billion other things.
That was most of my album/artist recommendations, honestly (other than a ton of either really pop stuff (I have a Ke$ha thing I know I know) or musicals. But at some point if you remind me I'm sure I can blerg a ton of individual songs that I think are awesome even if can't whole-heartedly recommend the artist/album/soundtrack/whatever/
Any time an artist gets more popular they're likely to get a lot more exposure overall. Any time someone gets more exposure they're going to inspire people to draw because they want to make awesome art just like them and learn to improve to be their own artist with their own take on the style and art that inspired them. There is also the thing that popular artists will have copy-cats looking to attain fame or notoriety via emulation, but this kind of behavior is borderline bad because it can easily be problematic.
In short, it's human nature to copy and emulate what they see and hear to learn and develop their own skills for something they don't know how to do. When an artist become's popular it makes people want to copy and learn from them to share in that popularity for whatever reason they want the attention. In the end, regardless of how each individual reacts and reasons determines if their behavior is good or bad since everyone was inspired by someone and something that got them to draw. It ends up being what they choose to do and reasons, or motives, for copying and emulating an art-style or an artist's style.
I'm about to drop a lot of songs so be warned! XD A lot of them have an electronic genre style, but these bands stick with me pretty well. Also, pirate metal band! I listen to a lot of music, but if you like some of these songs I can always suggest more of those types or pull from another genre... I listen to a lot of music. I like to have a wide range of music to listen to for mood sake. I'll mark stuff in parentheses for their general genres, but I recommend you listen to each song and give them a good listen to because these songs have a nice flavor to each. Most are bands/artists, but some are music studios that produce "Epic" genre music. Epic genre stuff can be drastically varied.

totally agree with you re: copying/human nature and all that. I think it really only becomes a bad thing when people are looking to "cash in" on a popular style or when they're eyeballing/tracing and claiming as their own. Seeing the way people become influenced by the art of others, I find it really fascinating, especially when it's not so much "how does this person draw eyes?" and more "what compositions/atmospheres does this person's art create?".
excellent links, thanks so much!! I especially like the Infected Mushroom stuff, boss as HELL man
