Notes on "Friends." by aeto

Just to avoid confusion or hurt feelings, here's what I am doing about the "friends" thing here...

I will generally only send friend requests to people I consider "knowing well." This generally means people I've met in person and and least track down when at cons, but it could be people I've spoken to extensively in email, IM, Twitter, etc...

I do not, as a rule, send friend requests to artists who have done commission work for me. I understand, "I'm a client, not a friend" in most of those cases. If I've done a lot of commissions with someone or, for other reasons, I feel like the interaction is a bit more friendly, I may do so, but that's the exception rather than the rule.

On the other hand, if an artist who has done commissions for me sends a friend request, I will generally accept it.

If someone I don't know well, hasn't done commissions for me, etc... sends a friend request, I'm sorry to say, but I'll probably ignore it. If I seem to do so and you DO know me, feel free to drop a note letting me know who you are; every now and then I don't recognize a name here when I might know the person in real life.

See, this makes sense to me. In the old FA system, it didn't matter if you were friends with someone or just liked their art and wanted to watch for more - so no distinction. If someone had 1000 watchers, there's no way for them to identify friends vs "Hey you look cool!" furs. Here, it allows for a clear "I know these people well" vs "I'm more the observer." (Of course, this clears the way for "Why am I not your friend?" but that's the individual's matter to deal with.)

The simple question on my mind though is: does "friending" someone count as following them as well? That's where it gets murky. The FAQ doesn't address this at all, and both icons have to be selected separately. Obviously, I don't have to approve watchers, only friends, and it is easy to just click both icons - but is it necessary, or is it creating just a general build-up of 'double-watchers' in a database somewhere?

Answers, I needs to find them.

Pretty much how I treat it. My only change is that I haven't met a lot of people personally (geography being the pain in the butt that it is) and so I leave up to do I know the person, have we talked online or off, and did we get along. By the way welcome to Weasyl. :)

I met you at so many conventions but I am always to shy to start to talk with you. Last con I saw you was MFF. Before the parade started, you wanted to have my little camera (my GoPro) for your skeleton head rod. :)
