It looks decent, and I would like to see more spread of furries into games, but... I dunno, it seems more or less like "generic furry MMO" and only one of those three words appeals to me. An MMO can be good but that genre now lives in the shadow of GW2 and others that have really raised the bar. And moreover, I just don't quite think the fandom has the collective interest to justify such a project. We are quite a diverse set of interests, so I wonder whether it's worth putting so many eggs in a basket that might only appeal to a smaller subset of the fandom. Interaction- and customization-wise, SL has them beat by default so that's a better place to just hang out, and gameplay-wise I don't see them measuring up to the recent MMOs out there that have taken advantage of more action-oriented gameplay. I don't see this being as fun or fulfilling, or even as interesting as those. And this is totally just personal opinion, but I'm not a fan of the generic furry realistic style. I'd much rather see something with a sense of style, something unique that you can tell at a glance, THIS is Antilia!

I mean, I wish them no ill will or anything and I hope they manage to pull through somehow on Antilia. I wouldn't really cast it aside before giving it a shot. I just think it's interesting where furries have really started to devote their attention. I feel like Starbound is/will be just as popular as Antilia within the fandom simply for having the option to mod in furry characters. I mean, just imagine how great a 2D furry MMO could be, then - something in a sort of Maplestory fashion but with deeper combat and a good 2D skeleton-based animation could make it super easy to even upload custom images for one's own character. Knowing how great it is just to hang out and interact in Maplestory, I think that kind of environment, if designed well, could be amazing for furries.

In a fandom that can be so wild and creative, I think something that's so predictable and been-there-done-that just doesn't feel like it's worth a big investment. Would it really catch on in a major enough way? MMOs require a lot of money for continuous server upkeep and keeping staff on for moderation, creating new content and keeping the game running smoothly. With a game with scope like this, I don't see that going down well if they can't get a lot of ongoing support. I'm afraid the novelty of it would wear off too quickly if they can't really deliver something far beyond what they should be able to.

I don't mean to step on their paws here. I just wanted to put this out there for discussion.

I agree with you on many points, and I think critical thinking is important in any creative endeavor,
I also think it is important to advocate for the creation of large-scale projects created within the fandom. I can't help but think of all the comics and story, and even some card and board games, that may never have seen completion if everyone was dominated by the critical mindset of "well it's just like [BLANK]" or "It'll never make it" or "[BLANK] is already better than it."

Maybe it will flop, maybe it won't. I think independently created furry media, BY furries, is really awesome. And again, personally, I think these large-scale endeavours are worth at least looking at. I'm not demanding everyone supports this, or any other project, I'm just doing my part as an advocate to get the word out :)

Yup, totally right. ^^ I have my own ideas of what would be great to see the fandom make but... hey, isn't that why I'm here? I can follow their lead and apply myself to make something the fandom can be proud of.
I mean, seeing a furry MMO coming out and not being all about sex, that's got to be worth something. The public sees us as all about the adult stuff, but what happens when we, within our own circles, manage to put together a big furry MMO and it's totally PG-13? Perhaps it could help to dispel rumors, and I have no doubt there are people who would really love to play it.

Doing large projects isn't just about satisfying the "collective interest" of the fandom, but rather trying to expand our interest in hybrid characters beyond it to a larger audience.

That said, a 2D MMO would've been a lot wiser project to tackle, for the reasons you stated and more. Much more manageable scope for a small team and especially with the budget they posted. Even then, it's a bit of a stretch, a bit TOO optimistic. :)

Yeah, that's what I'm worried about. I know a thing or two about what they're going after (though admittedly less than what they know, I'm sure!) and at such a scale, the budget seems a lot less like a way of funding the finished game or any ongoing service, and more of a way to get the thing to a decent alpha stage. I suppose they've been expecting a lot more support than what they're getting, especially post-Kickstarter. Hopefully they can manage to scale nicely to demand and put out something worthwhile even without the level of support they need to realize their vision.

I could be biased toward 2D, partially because Maplestory was the best MMO I ever played communication-wise, and also because Maplestory so horribly squandered its potential mechanics-wise. Platforming and fighting can be very solid mechanics in a 2D game, and exploring vast environments also works in that kind of setting while still feeling more intimate. I just haven't seen it done properly in a sidescroller MMO.
