Hey hey, Weasyl by sonderjen

Can someone give me the lowdown on what we're officially doing? Is it finally time to abandon FA? Can we make this happen... today?

Hey hey, Weasyl

I've already done it. Anytime I feel the pull to go back I'm just gonna remember the "SEE YOU IN A WEEK" people.

    • Link

Going through those two journals I learned a lot about the average Furaffinity user and I did not like what I learned very much. :(

      • Link

Agreed. Granted, I'm not happy with the people calling anyone who chooses to stay 'rape apologists' either- some people literally cannot afford to leave, even if they are sympathetic. I know plenty of people staying who were very gracious about me leaving and supported my decision - which wasn't just based on this incident but on years of piled up bad will.

I don't think Weasyl is some shining perfect website. But I gave FA multiple chances to improve and it never did. It's time to give a new site a chance, and anyone who thinks FurAffinity IS the fandom and that leaving it makes you some sort of traitor they can kiss my patoot.

        • Link

Yeah this is absolutely not the first stupid thing FA's done. And hey, maybe it'll be the last. That'd be nice.

But I think it's the last stupid thing I can handle right now, and because of it, Weasyl is finally getting the community that it so desperately deserves. I'm going to throw in my lot with these guys, and see how that goes for a while.

          • Link

            You're a cool guy Nemo.

        • Link

Yeah. I have good friends who 100% depend on commission money as all of their income; putting that at risk by leaping into the unknown is dangerous for them, and I totally respect that decision for artists.

All I know is, I am done with FA for now. I'm not going to go back as long as the people currently in power still have power. It's not safe, and I support bad things by doing so. (that, and FA is such a lazy undeveloped site that lacks so many features... in comparison to literally any of the alternatives, it is the worst)

But hey, over a third of the traffic at FA has shifted to here, and more is coming all the time. So that's good.

Even if FA remains and Weasyl doesn't engulf everything, that's probably fine too. When looking at the non-artist masses, the people who actually care about other people and think things like what happened are disgusting all came here; the people who are complacent or support that sort of disgusting behavior are staying there.

I know who I want to be in the company of.

        • Link

Agreed. Granted, I'm not happy with the people calling anyone who chooses to stay 'rape apologists' either

How about just the ones who don't make money off the site?

          • Link

Eh, I don't feel comfortable labeling anyone who didn't go into the "SHE DROVE THERE IT COULDN'T HAVE BEEN RAPE" tirade something like that.

    • Link

Hoping for more responses like this.

I know I've been away from this site for over a year, but man. It actually looks like a site designed in the last few years.

      • Link

I am sure out of sheer laziness FA will be the most populated site for the fandom for awhile, but I'll be happy if we even just get a fraction active here. No matter what, I can't go back now. Not unless someone else takes over.

        • Link

As long as most of the people I want to watch and interact with are here, I think I'll be fine switching. That was always the issue before, and why I was so vocal about pushing everyone over to FAP because ANY alternative was a good thing.

Even without the accusations, the whole thing reeks of fandom nepotism. This actually makes me miss DaveHyena. How warped is that?

          • Link

Funny thing is DaveHyena now goes by another name (usually some reference to pigeons as that's his new animal now I guess) and is always around to talk about Dragoneer's screwups on lulz or Vivisector whenever a new one arises. He's totally switched gears.

            • Link

Good for him. I was expecting some kind of breakdown if he didn't do something like that.

          • Link

Man as bad at everything as he was, Dave really did give it the old college try. I at least knew who he was because I saw him doing things, unlike the 30 admins that are on FA right now.

(Not that they're not doing anything I just don't personally see their actions myself)

    • Link

Is it just me, or are those people horribly insulting and arrogant at this point?

Sure, you can say that a two and three years ago, when there just weren't viable alternatives, but now?

The FA staff sitting idle while people continue to spout 'See you in a week' honestly just tacitly condones it, and in the 'What have you done for me lately, FA?' category, I see...hm. Er..

Well, they were down for a week. Yup.

      • Link

Yeah their smugness is infuriating. But if it makes people more determined to stay away to prove them wrong that'd be nice.

  • Link

done, but then I'll post my current collage series and get banned

    • Link

I haven't seen that yet, why would you get banned?

  • Link

Even if this is a short-term migration for some (which I haven't seen anything this big in awhile, so it's hard to imagine it is), I ain't going back. There's more than enough really cool people who I know are gonna make this their main site, and honestly I could not care less what happens on FA anymore. The furry community can support more than just one artistic hub. Besides, a smaller community seemed scary at first, but when I see the kind of people who're digging in their heels and refusing to leave FA I'm starting to think maybe, just maybe a smaller community is a blessing in disguise (though I realize that's very easy for me to say since I don't rely on furries financially).

    • Link

I'm hearing that after a few fits and starts, plenty of artists here are finding enough business to run with.

That may not speak for every one of them, but IMHO it's now a viable community. Honestly? I'm pretty much good here.

  • Link

It's pretty much happening, man. This is one of the largest migrations from that site I've seen. Not only is this place being an all-around better alternative, but the fact that when FA briefly went down around New Year's some people whipped up some software to transfer galleries and watches over to here, which surely encouraged more deeply-rooted users to move as well. Personally, I like the fresh start feel of it all. No clogged inboxes, no oversaturation of things to take in.

  • Link

Weasyl is probably one of the friendliest online communities I've ever had the pleasure of lurking in.

    • Link

      You're just everywhere I go, ain'tcha?

      • Link

As if you'd have it any other way!

        • Link

This is where I make a "MooooooooOOOoom! He followed me home!" But then there'd be screaming about antlered fox-abominations, and brooms, and all manner of unpleasantness.

          • Link

Man, what kind of mom wouldn't let her kid keep a freak of nature for a pet

  • Link

I don't know if this will be finally what makes it happen, but I'm happy to see this sort of progress. It's been astonishing how this has sparked.

And of course I'm thrilled you're here to watch it happen with us. How far do we go back as casual acquaintances, now? I forget!

    • Link

I think I first worked with you back when I was on VCL, which is over 10 years, now!

  • Link

I've told FA to go eat a fat dick after the whole "Let's put Zaush in a position of power and let him tell all the competent programmers to leave!".
I don't feel engaged to the site anymore due to horrible policies that just drain your emotional energy, and Weasyl is simply much more attractive to me. It has revitalized my desire to speak to others in art sites!

    • Link

FurAffinity had competent programmers? When was that?

      • Link

A little before putting Zaush in power, they had benanderson and some others, people who actually work on this for a living to fix the fuckfest that FA was. They were going to work on a new system and layout. Then Zaush came along touting experience he didn't have on a language he didn't know anything about, and he threw a shitfit and kept being horribly unpleasant to the point that he drove away all of the other programmers.

        • Link

I read the thread on the FA forums about it. Ben and his crew never actually interacted with Zaush in any way; their project was completely separate and Dragoneer completely left them out of the loop. He claims he'd forgotten about it and that they had never contacted him after the initial offer, and one of them admitted he had forgotten to keep in touch with 'Neer during development, which everyone assumed was his job. So, kind of a clusterfuck all around. But yes, the nepotism is shameless and Dragoneer is horrible at keeping track of things.

  • Link

Well I got permbanned for linking to a journal neer had censored, so you can say that I left 8D

    • Link

Haha, that's one way to do it!
