Thoughts on Collections: Give it a chance! by Lacus

Now, some of my friends have complained about the collections feature on this website, because they themselves commission a lot of art; and feel they are being stifled by not being allowed to feature commissions.

I want you guys to hear me out though, I'm actually enjoying this feature a lot. I browse the collections quite a bit and find new artists I had never known on FA or DA! And old ones that I still had yet to follow as well!

The time I've gone through collections has been well spent finding awesome artists, and I wouldn't mind starting to add a collection of my own so I can feature other artists too.

Speaking of which, I am going to be working on new reference sheets for my various fursonas + characters. These are going to be added to Characters, which is another tab I'm finding fun to browse.

I wish people would take advantage of the text descriptions, though! We could all learn a lot about the characters that way.

I'm still new to all the uses of the site, and haven't dabbled with the collections yet.
I'll have to check it out

I cannot stand the Collections system, and here's why. First off, you can't write the description for your own piece unless the artist agrees. Which is a problem if you like to post short stories with your commissioned pieces, or simply like to explain them in your own words.

Second, collections are in a separate tab from your gallery, which means most people miss half of your content on a quick browse of your user page.

Third, although it may sound petty, the Collections system keeps people from gaining any following whatsoever off of pieces that they thought up, and which involve their characters. I watch tons of people of FA who are not artists but frequent commissioners. If I particularly like any of their pieces, I will ALSO watch the artist, because the commissioner always gives proper credit. But I still like the character and the person, and want to follow them even though they don't draw. On Weasyl, there really isn't a place for users like that.

Fourth, I think it will actually HURT artist revenues because for all of the reasons mentioned above, people will view commissions as less desirable and valuable. I bet if you were to do a poll most people would be less likely to commission art in the future if the Collections system were to become the norm. I certainly feel that way as someone who has commissioned plenty of art myself. Not to mention, artists will lose exposure because less people view users' Collections than their Galleries.

Finally, I think it's simply unfair to not allow the commissioner to display the picture in his or her own gallery. If they created the character and thought up the scene, then they deserve to share in the creative credit. I mean, screenwriters get due credit for writing a great movie, not just the actors and directors, right? Paying the artist for his or her time is just the icing on the cake.

How many other artistic communities actually place restrictions on display rights for commissioned and paid-for pieces? To me it seems like saying "Here's a link to a copy of the portrait you had me paint of you, but the actual painting is staying with me." Which is just odd.

I don't think they are perfect for the reason you stated that it leaves commissioner credit out when it's not a main feature of the commissioner's gallery.

However, I am of the opinion this could be easily addressed by allowing the option to have collections instead of submissions be the main content of a gallery.

I also see your point about the commissioner's thoughts getting left out of the process, but my immediate thought was that I would comment on an original submission to say my piece, or now that you mention it a feature that allows me to add my own caption in my collections would be neat!

I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to figure out, something like if you scroll over the collected image it lets you read the commissioner's thoughts or something like that.

I love collections; it keeps everything so organized, and like you said, i really like walking through them and seeing parades of cool artists.
