What the Fox Furry Writer's Guild? by Tantroo

I have just seen one of the most mind blowing and tweets I have ever seen on Twitter— well, second to what GreenReaper said a few days back, but moving on—

This month's Book of the Month is Red Devil by @KyellGold! Pre-order it here: https://t.co/N48hw48sz4

Take a close look here and tell me what's wrong with this picture. "Pre-Order our book of the month."

Not buy it.

Not borrow it from a friend.

Preorder it.

Yes, I know Kyell Gold is Kyell Gold, however it just seems weird to me to give a "Book of the Month" title to a book that is still in the "Pre-Order" status. This has never to my knowledge occurred before, even with Kyell's own books. Divisions wasn't given the title until 6 months after it's publish date.

I asked them if they had received an advance copy of the book in order to evaluate its quality, however even then, giving such a title to a book that is not out yet is dubious behavior. Could you imagine if video games in pre-order status could get "Game of the Month" in gaming publications?

Could you imagine if PC Accelerator gave Game of the Month to Duke Nukem Forever in the year 2000? They'd be out of business— well okay they never did that and they're still out of business— but that's not the point. The point is, at what point does a Book of the Month stop being a suggestion of a book to read during the month and become an advertisement to boost release figures?

I'm not against advertising or promoting works. Hey, I'll do it myself: "Hey! Kyell Gold's new book is coming out, you should check it out." See? No problem with that. My problem is, I don't think that's what the BoTM was created for. It was created so that an interested furry could buy a book to read during the month. Not order it and wait for the title to release sometime later.

The thing is, even if you did receive an advanced copy, even if you did evaluate it and it was the best book you read this month, you could have waited. You could have waited until February when it would have been available to the general public. The Book of the Month, historically, did not have to be published on the very month it was given the award. There's no rush. It's not even a competition where there are losers that I'm aware of. So why the hurry? Why make your book of the month something no one can read right now?

Just a thought.
