Icons and Searching on Weasyl by Sugarboy

So far, I like a lot of what Weasyl does, it has a good amount of the functionality I require, and so far seems to run pretty speedily.

However.

This isn't a problem with Weasyl itself, and maybe you feel differently, but the ability for anyone to make their preview icons easily however they like with the handy square dragging thing has made for (I think) a lot of bad preview images. That is, a lot of heads. I understand the tendency to just drag the square around the main characters head in the image, that's a really easy "composition" to do! But maybe it's just me, I don't click on heads. I don't know -at all- what the content of the image is based on a headshot from the preview. I become even more wary when it's a headshot that is tagged as mature or higher rating. So for a large part, I skip on image previews that are just headshots unless they are impressively high-quality looking heads, and generally try to make my own previews show as much of the image as possible, as the standard preview icons are on FA. Can't always do that because it has to be a square and I don't have too many perfectly square images, but I try to get the gist of the painting in the preview so you know what you're getting into when you click on it.

Second, a somewhat small gripe, but it would be immensely more useful for browsing on Weasyl....the ability to search for images with "and". As far as I'm aware (please correct me if I'm wrong!) you can only search for tags with the "or" statement. If you type two words into the search bar it will show every submission with either of the words, and there is no way to only search for images with both of them. I can't search for "mass effect" because it will show every image tagged "mass", and every image tagged "effect", rather than only images with both words in the tags, which is what I'd want. It seems Weasyl tries to counter this by recommending you tag things with underscores if you want it searchable that way, but as far as I can tell that hasn't caught on.

Anyways, beta site, wanted to chime in with my two cents, still like the site fine overall!

For and, use a +word instead. For example, search mass +effect, or female +chubby.

Agree with you on the thumbnails though. I've stopped cropping mine for that very reason.

Ah! Thank you! I tried mass + effect, which to me seemed more logical, haha. One space off!

No problem, I was frustrated with the same thing before figuring it out :D They should add a little search section to the FAQ explaining this

I'm thankful they have that! But then it begs the question why they recommend underscoring it for multiple words in the tags. I suppose it's an even greater level of specificity, such as chubby_female which will guarantee a chubby female instead of chubby +female which might return an image of a chubby male with a female in the image as well....hmm.

          • Link

That's a really good point. I always thought the underscoring for multiple words was more for descriptors that have multiple words, like certain species (chow_chow, african_wild_dog, highland_cattle etc), but it definitely lends itself to more specificity, because like you said, chubby +female could give you an image of a chubby male with a female.

On the other hand, this all requires people to tag their images properly. D: I've noticed a lot of people not really tagging their submissions too well, and I try to help out (I love being able to tag other people's images), but you've gotta meet half-way~

I can agree abit with your problems with just head previews! It can really hide what the image looks like and you don't anticipate what you will see from the preview as much, i personally try not to make just head icon previews myself i try to include atleast a third of the body in the preview. The site does handle the previewing system pretty well I think, they could just work on search terms abit. But yeah! as stray said for now you can search multiple keywords for much more refined results with the +word system as stray pointed out!

Yep! I got that now, I looked through their help pages and everything and couldn't find out how to do it. Tried "and", tried a "+" but with a space between the words, tried putting it in quotations, couldn't figure it out!

If you hover your mouse over the preview it'll blow it up into a small thumbnail that you can check before clicking to full view.

Also most places use and underscore like size_difference

    • Link

Is that a setting or something? When I hover my mouse over a thumbnail, it just gets a slightly transparent black overlay with the title and who it's by, no small thumbnail blow up.

perhaps I might have mixed that up with sofurry. both of these sites are rather new to me. I'm terribly sorry

Badly cropped squares are better than no squares at all. Considering that, I hope they still let you upload a seperate thumbnail file if you want to (I haven't played around with uploading things yet).

The heads thing was pretty much the reason I never was much active here. I hope it dies down. It's annoying as heck not knowing what the thing you just clicked on looks like in full.
