FA versus Weasyl by Cybill

I'm not sure if its appropriate to bring this up, but yesterday, I've been noticing a bunch of tweets on my Twitter timeline of people expressing their slight disagreement regarding wanting to host their art either on Weasyl versus FA. The only thing is, FA is currently experiencing some technical difficulties at the moment, and here I see people running around with their heads cut off like its a Thanksgiving turkey massacre. Even though FA has gone through so much maintenance over the past couple months ,I don't see what the sudden uproar is about when FA gets a concussion. I guess some people become impatient. I'm completely aware for those who do commissions sometimes forget to save references that is needed., which can be avoided if one simply saves the file/refs immediately. The only thing I don't understand is why people are bringing up issues about artists wanting to migrate to Weasyl and being instantly viewed as a "prude" kind of attitude. Have you ever thought about the reason that people have been migrating to this site is to keep their journals updated and their watchers informed of their activities? No people jump to conclusions easily. To me that's understandable, since there's really no way to communicate with people on a site that's read-only mode. Simple things like that could have been the contribution to the site's recent traffic. I just get annoyed by the idea people assume Weasyl is full of "hipsteresque" individuals when in reality its still establishing an audience of its own, because its a relatively new site. What difference does it make when you bully someone new to something they're rarely familiar with, think of it in that terms.

Honestly, I think its a plain waste of energy to complain where people police you to were you want to post your work. I'd say post were you the sufficiently feel comfortable in doing. I sometimes use Tumblr as a means to post some of my general art that I don't post on FA, because of the potential exposure to a general group of audiences. There's still a bunch of shit that I don't like about Tumblr, like the reply system and the overall archiving of posts, sometimes slow down, but I don't normally mind if I find some way to get around it. I understand people come to FA, for the furry stuff, so I mainly use that site to post for what its intended. Whatever the reason is, I respect where people want to post no matter what. The only thing I wish people can handle differently is not to shove one's opinions down others throats and be respectful of that person's decisions instead. Like seriously, let's be adults here.

Just to note, I'm not going to disable my FA account. Though, I initially choose to remain in-active, due to personal reasons, I still may lurk around the site from time, unless the admins find a way to organize some of the issues people address with the site dating 10+ years back, say like the commission tag, maybe gallery folders and an edit button at least, than I may continue cross-post some work in this case.

Good day

I think people can be really aggressive about opinions (or lack thereof) on the internet, even on the most trivial maters. It's a trend I've noticed a while ago and I see it getting worse and worse as time goes by, but perhaps I'm getting too old and delicate? I get the feeling people react badly just because that's "what you do today".

Either way, I agree with you, in the sense that everyone should be (is?) free to post wherever they like, and everyone is free to prefer this or that other website. I don't want to get into what is or is not wrong with FA, this is probably not the right time and place to do it, but I think Weasyl is a good website, I like using it and I'm happy to see more people do so. I hope more and more join in the future! And this is my personal preference, if artists keep ditching it in favor of FA, I won't be offended and I'll just follow them over there.

It's not like rooting for this or that soccer club, it's not like politics -- It shouldn't be, at least.

I think a bit of competition can't hurt, and having one or more sites (Pixiv! <3) that offer more modern features might be the push FA needs to improve and ultimately maybe even survive it it comes down to everyone moving when the site is down for a long time! Do you remember that time FA was down for 2 months?

In the end it's all a matter of preferences.

Hopefully people will start treating preferences as preferences, and not as a reason to fight -- especially when it's not important or really worth it.

I'm pretty sure we're on the same page about the whole internet uproar happening everywhere, and its amazing how much bullshit quickly gets circulated when and you happen to notice things where your attention span is at its most vulnerable. I do like watching the fireworks go off every time, even when its not 4th of July.

Jokes aside, I wish people took more consideration of preferences rather than try to know whose right or not. I think both sides hold their validity of the facts pretty well, and people come to this site, simply because it feels more organized to them, and has a bunch of neat features. FA is used because it was the main traffic for the furry community at its peak. I hold no ill-feelings towards the people who think negatively about Weasyl's sudden popularity, but rather to be more open-minded and I guess give the site a chance. If they don't like it, they can go somewhere else. Simple.

There's even DeviantArt or So Furry, which feels like a hybrid between the two, but like you mentioned, its all up to people's preferences regardless.

Actually, I haven't been using Pixiv very much lately, aside from lurking!!!

That makes a lot of sense. I don't really understand why people have to choose one or the other or bash someone who decides to do just that. The reasons range from necessity, to laziness, to just personal preference. It's no one's business but that artist's.

    • Link

Precisely, it just saddens me, that people are viewing the migration thing in a negative light, when all it is about is choosing what preferences suit you best. I just find it comedic that people who do not use the site or are un-acitve account holders choose to kick sand in people's eyes, when its not even their business to decide and force people where to post. The reason I'm giving this site a chance, simply isn't for the furry community but its general appeal to both sides of the spectrum for both furry and non-furs.

      • Link

Exactly. That's one thing I like about it. They've said from the very start that it isn't a furry site but everything is welcome. Hopefully this site keeps getting better and growing larger, it's pretty cool here :D No one's forcing anyone to walk through the open door haha

It's silly to attack others on their preferences, not everyone is the same individual. It's the simple concept of "Theory of Mind" where your own thoughts are going to be the same as another individual's.

That said, my personal feeling is that FA is abusing it's position right now with very little being done to prevent these issues. There have been several promises that have been forgotten (e.g. new ui, wider site banner images, folders, streaming/auction decluttering). With the popularity and frequent assistance from the fandom through donations, I'd expect more than hacked in tweaks. It just feels like they've become complacent with their spot at the top and will only do something when an issue arises, rather than proactively working to future-proof the site.

There's very little transparency behind it all too, whereas sites like Weasyl and SoFurry actively update their social media to let people know of changes, maintenance, events, and more. The only updates from FA I ever see are how they're going to fix something that broke.

    • Link

Yea, I didn't even realize FA"s maintenance issues were that prolonged, since I joined the site like around 2008, that kind of disturbing to hear that these changes were never addressed even beforehand. I simply used the site just merely as a way to post stuff so I do not pay attention aside from seeing the splash pages for maintenance. I'm aware there's been a lot of bureaucracy abuse of the admins as many people told, but I am gong to hope that they do start getting their stuff together. Like I mentioned in my journal, those are just subtle things that I wish FA would at least specifically address.

I also do like how Weasyl/SoFurry actually keep updates about what they're going to do, and I think that compliments the reason I choose to reside here for the meantime. I also dig the little tag where you can headline your streams and whatnot without spamming people's inboxes or making submissions frequently that your going to stream. One of the reasons I hesitate to stream my stuff sometimes lol

People should host their art on every site that will allow them.

    • Link

Yea really..its just kind of sad to see people really try to police where to post your work. Its public domain, so people should piss off really.

  • Link

People need to stop being such maroons! Ugh.

I see Weasyl journals on FA about people being "OMG BUT FA HAS A MILLION MORE USERS DESPITE THE FACT IT SUCKS" about the whole idea that maybe, just maybe, an artist doesn't care about about the amount of watchers they have on a highly-niche art site.

    • Link

Truthfully, I was suppose to update my shinanigans for FC2014, so that's the reason for my recent activities lately of this site. However, my Twitter was always flooded with these stupid posts about people being whiny about Weasyl being the "hipsteresque" thing, but you can't blame people when assumptions are taken precedence over understanding. Like seriously, people make the biggest deal out of something because of disagreements with preferences, who knows. Overall, I think its ridiculous and people should take some chill pills really.

Quantity should never matter to how many times you post your work. Yes, I think FA would be a better site, if only they were a bit less transparent on their site maintenance and actually did something like provide folders/edit buttons/streaming headliners and you know plugins to make the experience a bit more bearable with general users.

      • Link

I think the only way FA would be able to go through with such changes would be to remove most/all of the current staff and bring in some fresh, eager talent that wouldn't "do it eventually" and get involved in various maladies.

    HELLO AMEN SISTER

I really wish there was another website like deviantart that wasn't so dead and full of BS. Where is the more variety art website with less hassle and issues???? D:

But I agree. I stopped wanting to use FA during the privacy leakage but due to the fact I have nothing really to hide I didn't see the need at the time, but now seeing how pathetically ran and coordinating they STILL are about fixing and finding solutions I've had enough.

Either way tho, you nailed everything right on the head here with this journal <3

You should try Pixiv wesite even though its in Japanese there is a english version of it, they're more open minded than FA and Weasyl.
