Things FA Can Do To Improve by PhantomFullForce

While we're on the subject of dumping all over FA, I wrote a list of things I wish FA would implement to improve:

* Folders!

* Page numbers when wading though gallery/scraps/favorites (rather than click "next" a bunch of times).

* Better search engine! Very few filters and you can't search your gallery/favorites. An example of searching: Type in *insert Pokemon here* and even with the SFW filter on, good luck wading through all the fat/vore/baby art. Come on guys, let me punch in a few more parameters.

* RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: Notes!

* The 90's style message board format with the messages that stray to the right of the screen. Ok, other sites do it too but there's ways to improve on it.

* The 1280x1280 limit. Sure you can bypass it if you reupload the full-size pic but the admins frown upon that (and even gave me a warning early in my FA career).

* A max of 12 of those : iconusername : things per page.

* Better journal organization, tags, take a look at LiveJournal or Blogspot for examples.

* Ability to edit existing posts.

* Site looks ugly.

* Site needs to stop going down.

* The only significant change in 2013 is the addition of the commission tab (which was in place but disabled up until that point).

* The Subject label when leaving comments. Does anyone even CARE or NOTICE any subjects other than "No Subject"? Get rid of it! :o

It's almost 2014, if any furry site can't do these things, that's sad. I know several web programmers have presented better FA code but due to internal politics, the admins rejected them. I don't think anyone expects the inept FA staff to do anything about it anytime soon. Sadly, e621 and InkBunny look more versatile but knowing the content on said sites, I'm not going there.

The quality of said websites reflects on the level of professionalism of the furry fandom and that's just sad. :\

    I cant call the Site UGLY, but things could always be better.

    Then again, since its so simple, my computer spends less time trying to load pretty stuff and HTML coding that would slow down my computer. Like DA and SF tend to do.

    And yes, Dosens, if not thousands of users including myself have made these exact same points, even more about FAs flaws and what it could do to be better. But as its been stated just as much, if not more; Dragoneer wont allow even Volunteers that WANT to help FA - Help FA. So the site is doomed unless His way eventually works or he decides he wants to try other things.

    We all know FA has been going further downhill, but it should be common knowledge and recommended that people should learn to branch out. Sure, its annoying, better to have one general HUB and a place were the community is strong. And for artists; where the money is at.

    But instances like what FA is going through now, especially the crap thats happened in the past, the idea to Branch out should be pushed. IB (If you can stand the Cub *Filter doesnt always stop it because of lazy tagging by users*) SF, DA (The community is smaller, and there are lots of haters. But most of us I hope have thick enough skin to deal with it), Weasyl, etc,,,,its good to be in more then one place. More possible fans, Content and possibly more business

      About site performance, that is true, and probably the biggest credit I give to the design. I surf sites on my iPhone browser (yeah, it's stupid) and FA runs well everytime while dA gives me fits with its popups and fancy effects. But still, I wish FA had something else going for it besides a plain dark blue/gray BG and generic HTML borders. Maybe experiment with it a little more and survey a couple of testers?

      I'm fairly certain these have all been mentioned but I haven't seen a list posted anywhere for a while. I actually have some PHP/MySQL coding experience (I'm a game programmer) so I think to myself, "it shouldn't be THAT hard to implement or fix feature X, why don't they do it?" Can't believe Dragoneer's ego gets in the way like that. If it weren't for the Stockholm Syndrome that so many users have with FA, furries would leave in droves and actually give the admins an impetus to improve the site.

      I've only been posting on furry sites for a year now. FA is my go-to destination for talking with other furries and searching for commissions simply because the most activity happens there. dA is a lost cause for me since I can't pick up traction there, and Weasyl doesn't have much traffic at all. I already get my load of furry smut from FA so I don't want to see cub porn, oh please no, so IB is out of the question. I've yet to try SoFurry and would like to know more about it. Though it doesn't hurt to post on more sites than FA, it's networking which is a rather nice thing. :)

        It wouldn't hurt for other users to stake their claim in Weasyl either. Support a young site, network a little more. After the stalker incident in February, Weasyl might rival FA in the future when it comes to users. Manifest Destiny!! Go get it ...

          Stalker incident...?

          • Link

            Back in February, a female artist on FA was being continually harassed by a furry stalker across multiple sites. Wanting to have sex with her, etc. She posts a journal spilling all the information that's been piling up and is suspended as a result (FA doesn't allow slanderous journals that specifically target individual people). A lot of people raged and left for Weasyl. Eventually, FA admins apologized and banned the stalker and everyone migrated back like nothing had ever happened. :\

              Sounds like typical FA admin behavior. You should have seen what happened with Zaush four years ago...

    definitely needs folders, and probably the page numbers, but the site isn't ugly.

    • Link

      Perhaps it's not ugly to many but there's always room to improve the aesthetic appeal...

    This. All of this.

    Very late comment, I know.
    I agree with most of those points, but FA has a way better search engine when it comes to filtering than Weasyl, SoFurry and InkBunny.

    You can see the syntax by clicking the "Help" button on the search page.

    An example of searching: Type in insert Pokemon here and even with the SFW filter on, good luck wading through all the fat/vore/baby art.

    Try this search query: pokemon_name -(fat | vore | baby)
    or pokemon_name -fat -vore -baby

    only filter the keywords:
    => pokemon_name -@keywords (fat | vore | baby)

    The other issue is people not [sufficiently] tagging their uploads (add "no user suggested tags" to your list)

      I actually did not know that, thanks! FA could make that a little more obvious since I didn't think to minus a bunch of keywords. Not the most convenient method but better than nothing.
