With a heavy heart I have to announce that another icon of music died this week. The legendary Lou Reed, front man and leader of the equally legendary Velvet Underground, and innovative indie rock solo artist, passed away at age 71 on Sunday, October 27.

It was said due to complications of a kidney transplant

The Velvet Underground took a little while to grow on me. Then, 'I got it'. The essence of their style was painting pictures with sound. A very 'artist' like approach to music that had never been done prior. To describe their music was difficult because it bounced around from sheer noise to beautiful ballads to dark psyche and rock and roll. They continue to be one of my top 20 favorite bands along with Lou Reed. They sounded like nothing before them and were considered one of the most influential bands of there time and long after. Some popular musicians who took a page from them were David Bowie and Iggy Pop.

To this day you can hear Lou's and The Velvet Underground's influence in many new artists.
