September 2023 - End of the Month Post by Blokfort

It’s been a while since doing an end of the month post, but that’s honestly only because I felt like I had nothing to really say that would have been different from the last one. I’ve been fiddling with brushes in Krita and doing sketches, commission and comic work, but other than that nothing really profound or noteworthy, until this month that is.

I’ve mentioned in an earlier Patreon post that I’m putting the Eyes on the Prize comic on hold again, because I’m having a hard time doing the comic and commission work at the same time. I’m still learning in general how to even do comic type stuff or how I want the comic to even look, which commission work will get in the way of. I’ve had to relearn how to even draw the main characters several different times (though now I think I have a good handle on that part!) and flip flopping between ‘learning how to do comic work’ and commission work breaks my flow with it. It’s weird to explain. So, my plan is to pause the comic again, get all of the commissions I have currently in the list completed, and then to finish the comic, all 30ish pages of it, with some random sketches and other stuff in between (but not commissions). I’ve had this comic hanging over my head for far too long and I think it’s about time to put all my effort into it, for whatever form it takes in the end. I say “whatever form it takes” because this comic is still a highly experimental one, because again, I don’t know what look I want for it, so I’m trying different styles and processes for it. One last thing for this comic stuff is that If I end up not really liking it in the end anyway, it’s possible I’ll look into doing animation stuff. Though, this mostly all applies to only “traditionally set up” comic pages. I feel like I don’t have as much of an issue with single frame comics. I don’t have as much of an issue with storyboarding single-frame comics, but usually get stumped with traditional comic pages, and I usually have to re-edit them later anyway. It’s annoying!

Speaking of different styles, I’ve recently played around with Krita’s default watercolor brushes and they’ve been a lot of fun! They don’t take too long to color with and I generally like the results at the end. It makes me want to pick up actual watercolor and see if I can learn anything from that. I think I’d like to try incorporating these brushes for background work, but we’ll see. The process for using the watercolor brushes is generally the same as flat colors, just slightly messier and has more of a texture to it. Though, one weird thing about it is that I do all of the “watercoloring” on 1 layer, which doesn’t allow much leeway or changeability in the future.

For the next month or two or so, I’ve got some single-frame comics and some private pieces (that sadly won’t be posted here, heh.) Hope you all enjoy them!
