Creating Among Critique by Trevor-Fox

There are reviews that I enjoy watching on YouTube where people debate the quality of various pieces of media. They go back and forth on what makes a piece of art good using objective and subjective reasoning. I often go back and forth in my head, reasoning out why I like something or what I think makes it good. But as a creator, there IS some advice I want to give to other creators and potential creators that I have learned as I go along.

No art is above critique. Everything should be allowed to be critiqued no matter what it is. This can be quite difficult, especially if the critique isn't constructive, or if it isn't phrased in a way that we can handle, but with the internet being so vast, that is bound to happen.

As a creator, it's really nice when people love your work, and it can be disheartening when they don't. 1 negative comment can sting and take the wind out of your sails after receiving 50 compliments. So what do you do? How do you deal with this? With time, confidence, and perserverance.

Time. Sometimes, you need time to think about and recover from any sort of comment that may have upset you. Everyone will be different. It's important to not let your anger get the better of you. Don't lash out hatefully. If something does really upset you, it's best to take a step back, keep control, and think about what you want to say if you want to say anything at all. Give yourself some time. Can you take away anything positive from this that can help you in your art?

Confidence. Be confident in what you make. YOU made it. YOU put it out there. That's incredible! You have created and brought life to something, and you put it on display in front of others. They didn't make it. YOU did. Be proud of what you've done, and be willing to continue to create and improve. Only you can make yourself create more.

Perserverance. No matter what storms may come, keep creating art. Sometimes we need a break and sometimes we need to take a moment to recharge our batteries. The important thing is to not let others stop you from creating more art just because they may have said mean things or they may have critiqued your art. It's okay. Critique isn't bad, even if it's phrased in a way we may not like to hear. Do you listen to it? Or do you continue doing what you're doing? Well, that's up to you. Proper critique is given to try and help people improve, but the artist is the one who has to keep making the pieces. Keep going. You will perservere and get better over time.

It helps to understand that YOU have the control in these situations. YOU choose to be patient, YOU choose to be confident, YOU choose to keep going. Is it hard? Yes. But you DO have that power. You have control. Take control. Take charge. Use that and continue your artistic journey. Don't let a hiccup get in the way of your continued development as a creator. Keep forging ahead and creating stuff that brings you happiness and for others to admire.
