I'm not a die hard Sonic fan, but I am a fan. I grew up playing few of the games and watching both versions of the Saturday morning cartoon shows. I never own a Sega console (I was more of a Nintendo kid myself), but everytime I have a friend or neighbor that has one, I come over and visit to play the Sonic game. So, when there's an announcement of a live action Sonic the Hedgehog movie. I was both excited and nervous. Excited because I am a Sonic fan and nervous because video game movies have always been box office bombs. The only exception was Wreck-It Ralph. The ONLY (so far) box office success. And I have seen the design when the first trailer came out. I admit Sonic didn't look good at all, but I didn't mind it much as everyone else did. Mostly because I think if the story is good, who cares about Sonic's design. But, after that huge backlash, Paramount decided to go back and redesign Sonic. I was worried because once they redesign him, it might affect the movie as a whole.

After just watching it, it didn't at all. I can safely say that if they kept the original design of Sonic in the movie, it probably wouldn't work as well. The redesign helped out a lot. So, the work was definitely worth it. The movie as a whole, though, is a typical kids movie. It's definitely aimed at kids, but it's not terrible. It's actually surprisingly good. There are some typical kids movie tropes that we all saw many times and there are some from worse kids movies like Hop and The Road Chip. But, the writing is much, much better. Jim Carey stole the movie as Dr. Robotnik. He was the 90s Jim Carey we all know and love. The Mask, Dumb & Dumber, and Ace Ventura Jim Carey. You can tell he's having a blast. And the voice of Sonic himself was the same guy who voices Dewy in the Ducktales reboot. You can tell he has the same type of mannerisms from the new Dewy, but it definitely fits Sonic to a tee. He's still the way past cool character you all know and love and the actor did a great job.

Overall, if you're a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog. You will like this movie. If you have kids, you won't be disappointed. By the way, stay during the credits. It's worth it. ;)
