Vintage European Postcards by RedCoatCat

I said to myself I'll be social on this site.

I collect postcards from 1900s up until 1945 or what is called the chrome era, though I really focus on collecting WWI postcards.

I prefer what is termed as real photo postcards where they are a photo. My favourite post card I currently have is of a WWI German training trench in early 1915.

I also get mass produced ones, especially of cities and landmarks. Cities and landmarks are especially useful for me for drawing backgrounds, may not be as interesting to show people as compared to all the ones featuring uniforms.

I crave books focused on photos of pre WWII European cities, people etc. Such things are not as easy to find as you would think, least where I am currently located. I can find (also own) plenty of Canadian or North American ones.

This is where I spend my money...

They got a special vibe to them, especially the colored photographed ones. A mix between propaganda, the cruelty of war and a sense of capturing the moment. Still got some old photographs of a relative during WW I, maybe I could keep on the loukout for some should be way easier to get them over here

Ohhh I would be so grateful if you could, it's very kind of you to offer! :)

I would gladly pay, I'm so starved for reference material when it comes to backgrounds outside of North America and UK pre WWII.

I agree, for me it's like a little glimpse of the past that I'm preserving when I collect these postcards. I've figured out a few photo cards I have on year and very least regiment(when they feature a uniform) So sometimes it can be a mystery you can attempt to figure out.

It's also sad as well as humbling, so many of them look so young and were!

Do you know anything about your relative in WWI? Hopefully I'm not prying I love hearing about other peoples genealogy or family origins.

I only have a photo of my great grand father in the second boer war, he also did serve in WWI but I only know the regiment he served in.

I can most certainly keep an eye out for these, no problem :)

So you are mostly looking for photo postcards from any country other than the US and UK ?

Sadly no not much surprisingly not many members of my family served during the wars, and when they did their backgrounds are always a bit fuzzy since all the people who could tell you more about it are already dead

Thank you again, this would be such a big help to me. I can't stress how grateful I am! :D

I'm mostly looking for anything of continental Europe pre-1945, especially Western Europe. Anything from landmarks, cities, streets, neighbourhoods. US and UK content isn't hard to find in Canada, I still like it as I'm always collecting anything of Guernsey and Jersey.

That must be disappointing, I’m not sure how much you are into genealogy but it does happen a lot with families. I know when I attempt to find any more details of my relatives in Scotland the information is sparse but I least have a few surviving journals to go by.

No problem, so anything goes or does it have to be popular landmarks and such ? There is some stuff on Ebay and I found a rather good antiques dealer though these are probably a bit on the expensive side. It's in german but maybe the categories name will be good enough to browse them.

Yeah it is a bit unfullfilling not knowing a major part about familiy history since I love history and doing family research. Oh well it can't be helped I guess

I do shop on ebay regularly for my collection. Though the problem with ebay is often cards are put into lots where you can get anything from any era(most common is a lot of 1960s with a FEW pre 1945 thrown in) And the sites dedicated to postal history and collecting postcards can be pricey since they sell them individually. But it's not just postcard but also photo book like the pictorial history of a city.

Doesn't have to be in English since I'm looking for someone that is mostly focused on the images.

Really anything showing settings, buildings, doesn't have to be popular landmarks either. I get a lot of work drawing European history and I often worry about the backgrounds and if I'm getting details close to correct.

Ooo I haven't seen that site before! I do have a few sites I visit frequently but I haven't been to that one, thank you! :)

Force me to practice my German navigating on it, which I'm woefully neglecting the last few months. Classes will be interesting when they resume in the fall. :P

It's nice to chat with others that love history in this community. :)

Is there any eras in particular you have the most interest in?

              • Link

Yeah they can be rather pricey, the good thing is over here most collection of cards are in your desired timeframe. I'm having an eye on ebay maybe I can shoot something cheap for you. Wel if you are going to need any help regarding that site just write, I would be more than happy to :)

Well I guess I have a pretty stereotypical interesst in history, I do like ancient history regarding greece, rome, egypt but I guess my main interesst lies in the medieval times. Not that hollywood stuff but how things really were, namely the change from the high middle ages to the Renaissance and all these long lost ideas that came back with it. Besides that the Napoleonic Wars and how they changed the face of europe. But I guess you could say nearly everything until our times since my country has such a diverse and difficult history haha

                • Link

Stressing not the holly-weird history made me chuckle. I swear movies don’t know how to present any time period or conflict well and also make it entertaining since that is the purpose of big budget movies sadly. Then the ones that do get it close are often forgotten by the masses since they are not entertaining enough.

I bet from where you are earlier time periods like the Middle Ages seem a lot more alive. :)

My interest lies in modern history up into contemporary history. Not that I don’t find earlier time periods fascinating, I just often have harder times relating to them.

Though I admit to jumping around a lot from reading about the Seven years war to a WWI journal to a few books on the Napoleonic period when it’s my own pursuits and not work related. I find reading real conflicts and struggles very moving.

You are very correct Napoleonic wars and other conflicts of the late Georgian/Regency era (such as the war of 1812 for my country) really did change the shape of many modern day countries.

I’ve always been curious about how the Napoleonic wars are taught over there.

Thank you so much for your offer of help on the website, I may have to take you up on it.

I have enjoyed chatting on here with you, you wouldn’t happen to use Skype or any other IM programs? Hopefully I’m not being creepy asking that. :P

                  • Link

Yeah I guess these kinds of movies have a different focus but like you said there are also some good examples for it. You are right it is easier to 'relive' history over here regarding these time periods, there are always little elements and stories that will keep the history alive. Living near the french border we had our own share of history with the French and there are a lot of influnces from them and vice versa. But I guess that goes for most european countries, we had quite an eventful and conflict ridden past haha.

I would be more than happy to assist you, and thanks likewise :)

Don't worry it's not creepy I'm always happy to meet new people though I'm usually bad at initiating conversations, I'm more a listener and always afraid I will bother people haha. My Skype is Sivel11

I thought I caught that kind of vibe fro your "The Battle of Queenston Heights". I'm into cabinet cards myself.

When I call my parents today I'll ask Dad about the stack of 3D cards he inherited from Aunt Grace, if those are still around and if he can scan those. Lots of European sites from before and during WW1. (Lots of US stuff too. basically for people that could not take travel vacations, 3D cards were the next best thing.

Yes I have seen 3d postcards. I would be interesting in seeing them :)
