James Gunn fired by Disney by JohnStripedfur

I usually don't write about certain news on my posts. I sometimes do, but only for just the entertainment types. This kind of is, but I think it goes with what's been happening this year in the fandom as well as around our country. So, here goes.

A couple days ago, from what I've read and seen so far is that a far right group of hackers went into James Gunn's twitter history and dug up some of his very old posts of the jokes he made at the time when he was trying to get attention by being provocative. Apparently, the tweets in question were about rape and pedophilia. Now, I hadn't been able to actually read the tweets themselves because none of the news articles showed them and they were no where to be found anywhere else. If he really did post those tweets, they are definitely indefensible and disgusting. But, he made those tweets almost a decade ago and he hasn't made those kinds of tweets since. As well as apologized for them years ago and had been a better person since.

So, was Disney right for firing him. I say yes and no. Yes because those tweets go against everything Disney stands for and they cannot have somebody who made them on their payroll. And no because those tweets were made many years ago and the man apologized for it. The reason for firing him is because they had to in order to prevent some of the media posting headlines about James Gun for making those kinds of tweets. So, it was PR nightmare and I feel for them. But, I think Disney should've grown some backbone about this because this was obviously a ploy by the extreme right wing for punishing Disney for firing Roseanne over her racist tweets. They were like, this guy made a tweet that was so much worse, why you still have him employed?! So, it's pretty much a loose-loose situation for Disney. If they defend him, the conservative news will say Disney is defending a man who jokes about pedophilia, if they fire him, people will say Disney did it to avoid that. So, it's messed up no matter how you view it.

I personally think Gunn should've deleted those tweets or at least deactivated his account and created a brand new one so that those tweets won't come back to haunt him after his public apology. But, hackers can still find a way no matter what. That's what scary about social media and the internet in general.

The whole thing on James Gunn kind of reminds me about what's been happening in the fandom as well as other things across our country. From accusations, to insults, to call outs, and attacks. I've been staying away from all this drama because I don't want to get roped into it and plus, I don't want to get accused or call something I'm not. If I defend the right, I'll be called a racist and a Nazi sympathizer, if I defend the left, I'll be called unpatriotic, a terrorist, and unAmerican. It's a loose-loose situation for centrists and those who truly believe in freedom of speech. It's unnerving for what's happening on social media.

In fact, this whole thing reminds me so much of the episode from The Orville. It's called Majority Rule and I highly recommend this episode to anyone. In this episode, the crew of The Orville went to a planet that looks like early 21st century Earth. On this planet, the entire population is run entirely by social media. Society is viewed by how many likes and dislikes you receive over your entire life and if you get enough dislikes, you have to go through a "apology tour". And if the population doesn't believe your apologies, they send you to the correction facility where they literally lobotomize you in order to become a "better citizen". It's quite a wake up call because it's pretty much about social media becoming judge, jury, and executioner on all opinions and actions. And I'm just afraid we might head down that road.

I think this is something we all should think about. Because mob mentality is a very dangerous thing and throughout history of mankind. Mob mentality has done nothing, but disastrous things.
