and then the cops showed up by sixrabbits

So I make a habit of locking both deadbolts every single night, and checking them before I go to bed.

This morning I got up and the keyed deadbolt was unlocked, but the other deadbolt (which can only be unlocked from the inside) was unmoved. I tried to ignore it for most of the day, but when you have anxiety it's really hard to push those thoughts out of your head. Why was the keyed deadbolt unlocked? Could someone have a copy of my key?

I called the front office and left a message, mostly hoping for assurance that no one could have a copy of my key. They ignored me. I waited 4 hours before calling the property management services and getting a run around until I could talk to the property manager about it. She said they take no responsibility for anything and if I wanted anything done I would have to file a police report.

Cue my anxiety getting worse.

I then start to think about the thought that if someone had a key, they could be in my apartment right now. They could be waiting for me. I am basically in tears at work, barely holding it together. One of my coworkers, who is a big Marine, offered to follow me home and check my apartment just in case. I think it didn't help my anxiety that he is also taking this very seriously.

After he has gone through my whole apartment (not many places to hide), he leaves. At this point I am feeling a little better and maybe a little foolish for making such a big deal out of it, but still waiting for the police to arrive so that I can file a report and at least have this on record. The cops find no evidence that the lock has been tampered with. The going theory now is that the lock is just faulty.

Basically stressed at least half a year off my life today.

I certainly hope you get something resolved.

Oh dear, I hope it was just a fluke or something easily explained. I don't blame you one bit for being scared and anxious. I get that way sometimes and I don't even live alone

I would not be surprised if it is just a problem with the lock. I had found it partially unlocked a few times in the morning, and before I just assumed I didn't lock it correctly, but that night had made sure it was turned all the way and properly locked.

Now I have a new lock and a door jammer to ease my fears.

On a funny note, I had been cuddling with my rat Petri to ease my anxiety (basically the top reason I have rats) and answered the door with him on my shoulder. The cop took a step back and his partner wouldn't come within 5 feet of the door.

Haha, protect and serve! (as long as you keep the rats away)

A lot of people don't realize how great (pet) rats are

It's funny to see big tough guys shy away from my sweet little rats.
