Is commenting going out of fashion? by LavaBat

Is it just me, or does it seem like people are commenting less and less on submissions nowadays? Once, people could get several dozen comments on a commission or a story, and now people seem to be lucky to get ten or so.

Interested in hearing what people here think.

I feel like Weasyl's always quieter than most other places. For example, looking at the "Recently popular" section, images might have like 10 comments at most, and usually only three or four. It's rare to see a huge comment chain here.

Its not just on Weasyl I've notice this - but on FA, DA, and a crap load of other sites (both furry and non-furry related).

I try to comment, but it's hard with anxiety...

    • Link

      That's understandable.

I've seen this on EVERY piece of the internet lately
IE It used to be youd comment on everything you saw: be it on an art site, newgrounds, albinoblacksheep, or what have you
I think the newness of the internet has worn off, and with the advent of social media, people would rather consume than contribute
I miss the old days badly sometimes
I used to get 100+ comments a day on Sheezyart

Yeah, I miss those days as well. :C

Even when I try to revive that sort of communication on here by commenting on what I favorite, it ends up being to no avail as the artists either don't reply or only reply with like a standard "thank you :D" and I never know how to follow it up
So I've slumped back into the shadows until another burst of energy happens

I've had that problem as well. Now artists seem to only reply to their patreon backers most of the time. I can understand that, but it doesn't take that much effort to reply to others, surely? And don't call me shurley!

          • Link

Yeah, its a real shame (also yay airplane)
Also there's no such thing as gifts it seems anymore! I remember how we used to all draw each others characters for fun. In fact, my art has died down a ton because I just lost all sort of motivation from losing what I felt was a great community feeling

I remember those days as well! I still get commissions for others every now and then - but not very often. And I've never received one either.

Its a real shame! And I feel like I should start it up again, but, again, motivation has died dramatically
I used to make stuff for the comments if I'm totally honest lol

I do miss the past with comments but I get something here so its o.k. with me. I was out of the social part online for quite awhile but seeing all these accounts people have to keep up with now would make one feel less like commenting.

Commenting isn't, or wasn't, just about keeping up with the Jones or being a "good follower". It was a good way to get constructive criticisms once. In fact, it was a really good way to improve on your art or story writing style once.

Always had problem to write down comments but I try whenever I can.
Helpful comments are desired but also afraid to step on the artist toes for mentioning something that could be improved ... dont like to start any drama -.-

    • Link

There are a lot of drama llamas around the place these days, aren't there?

      • Link

mostly on fa, havent seen many of those on here yet

        • Link

Let's hope it stays that way here!

Honestly, I think that with the massive amount of media that we consume on a daily basis, commenting has just become a bygone of this digital age. You think about it, for most furries, we have to keep up with Twitter, youtube, FA, DA, SF, WS, FN, and whatever other social networks that they might be on. Then there is keeping up with television shows that might be on whatever platform of streaming sites like Hulu, netflix or what have you. That is a veeeeery large amount of media... Add on having to keep up with real life like work and other real life things... It is no wonder commenting has taken a drastic nosedive into oblivion. I try to Comment when able but simply put... I got far too many things to manage.

I only follow sites that have artists that I want to watch on them - but even keeping track of three different sites is a pain in the arse.

      • Link

Tell me about it. You happen to be one of the few creator that is almost exclusively on this site. There are others that are exclusive to other sites which makes following them a little easier but, when you have about 30 people to keep up with... It is a bit of a pain in the tail for sure. Most days I spend a good two hours just clearing my feeds. Then there is trying to be social with people... which I am not too good at.

Anyway... I think you get my point. Imma shut up and go back to being mostly silent now.
