USB 3.0 Ports Suddenly Don't Exist by ACDragon

This has happened several times over the last several months. USB 3.0 ports will be working fine, then out of the goddamn blue for no apparent reason at all, they completely disappear from Windows. They're still physically there, and they're still getting power, but Windows 7 absolutely will NOT acknowledge that they even physically exist on the motherboard. I wish I could reproduce this bug, but I can't, and Google is utterly useless when trying to find out information about this problem.

There is no warning when this happens. If I go into Device Manager and look at the USB ports there is simply no mention at all of the ports. There are no "unknown device" warnings at all. As far as Windows 7 is concerned, there simply are no USB 3.0 ports on the motherboard whatsoever. The motherboard's BIOS says they're hooked up and they're in perfect working order, it's only Windows that won't acknowledge their existence.

I can still hook things up to the USB 2.0 ports, and they work perfectly fine. Also, I've had this problem with another motherboard from a different brand than the one I'm using now, and like with this board, the bug only affected the USB 3.0 ports, but not the 2.0 ports. So I know that this is not a hardware problem.

The thing is, though, I've never had this problem with USB 3.0 until about a year ago, which is when a lot of my other computer problems began. I've replaced literally every important part of this computer and the problems still keep coming back to haunt me. I just don't get it. In another month, the problems will have been with me for a full year. I have no way of knowing what is causing these problems.

Can you remember what you did a year ago, right when this stuff happened?

It started with a power outage during a storm. I had just bought a brand-new surge protector and when the power outage hit it didn't stop the surge and it fried a bunch of my components. All those components have been replaced since then, but it still acts all wonky sometimes.

I have recently learned, however, that USB 3.0 is unstable at the best of times, and I've decided to go ahead and stop using them in favor of using a hot swap mobile hdd rack, installed into my remaining available optical drive bays. I've already got one picked out for my 2.5" 4TB drive, which is really the only thing I use USB 3.0 for in the first place. I should be able to get a hold of that in a few more days. I'll think about getting larger ones later on for my 3.5's.

One of the other problems I had was explorer.exe randomly crashing. I've noticed, though, that removing a file deletion software I was using called "File Shredder" seems to have dealt with that problem. Something about a faulty context menu link or something. I should point out that I started using that program at about the same time as the problems began.

Storm huh? Weird...a few nights back I had a nightmare about some kinda purple lightning attack on my apartment, the ground strike made a crater and blasted all of my city's electricity then the bolt stayed connected to the ground and moved towards me and I could feel the static power...but this dream was before you posted your first post here...odd...
