Computer Problems Part Deux by ACDragon

I think I've further narrowed down the problems on my computer motherboard. The problems have mainly been centered around my USB ports, file operations between hard drives, and a couple times it has also affected my BIOS. This leads me to believe that the problem centers around the Southbridge chip. I'm getting a burning smell from the computer after long hours of running it, and at first I thought it might be the Northbridge chip because it's right between the video card and the CPU. But the problems are inconsistent with Northbridge functionality, which if I understand it correctly, handles the RAM and the PCI/PCI-E expansion slots on the mobo.

The Southbridge, OTOH, is most likely the culprit for two reasons. The first is that the Southbridge controls all I/O functionality as well as the BIOS. This includes the SATA controllers, onboard USB functionality, and the PS/2 connectors, one of which I have a spare keyboard hooked up to due to repeated keyboard lag on my USB mechanical one.

The second reason is that the video card has a lot of overhang, and partially covers the Southbridge heatsink. I would move my GPU to another PCI-E slot, if there was another one to move it to, but this board is as barebones as barebones can get, and so there's only such slot for the GPU to go into.

So I guess that since nobody can help me buy the new motherboard, I'm going to have to make this thing last as long as possible until I can replace it later this month. I've already disabled the onboard USB controllers in the BIOS. I can also reconnect my USB keyboard (I have a couple USB cards installed via expansion slot) and then go back into the BIOS to disable the PS/2 connections completely as well. The only things I can't disable are the LAN (because I don't have a card), the BIOS (because the mobo needs it to run at all), and the SATA controllers (what good's a computer without the use of its drives?). Hopefully disabling the things I can disable will help. I can also minimize my SATA usage by going to a bare minimum of installed drives and using externals via my USB cards. It won't be fun, but if it keeps the Southbridge usage down to the bare minimums and keeps my computer working until I can replace the mobo, then I think it'll be worth it.

Well I can understand about feeling like no ones going to help you, but this is the internet, though you can talk more people into helping with money problems, the same goes with not being able to get anyone too, same odds ratio kinda...and not everyone uses Paypal, though its the most common online third party backing solution...

Hey just thought I'd reply because no one else has.........yet.......

Thanks for the response. It's encouraging at this point even to get one at all.

Besides, I do understand why people aren't helping. There was a con quite recently and people are only now coming back from it. Little hard to help anyone when folks are drained of cash because of a big event like that. So, I've resorted to jury-rigging until I can afford the new mobo on the 13th.
