Dream - Robot Apocalypse by Runewuff

I was in a city investigating strange occurrences in run-down buildings. Seemed to be set several decades of technology ago. Eventually my PI work converged with a massive official police investigation, which led us to work together and check out a hide-out in an abandoned factory on the opposite edge of town.

Before we could get in, maybe in response to our approach, evil black spikey metal robots with red eyes streamed out down the road, overrunning the cops in a battle. Our perps weren't even human, they were robots! I ran, escaped, and kept on running.

I joined with refugees, families, some of my own, fleeing across fields, farms and forests, but we could never really regroup, the evil robots kept coming after us.

I began pursuing research into my own race of robots, taking it with me as we were forced from place to place. Eventually, I was the only one left, the last human alive.

In a ruined structure, hidden from view by being surrounded by a larger industrial complex like a square around it, in a forgotten ghost town abandoned long before the robots, secluded by lost overgrown forest, I completed my research. My new robots were silver, gold, rounded, and very intelligent, though "newborn" and lacking knowledge.

The dark robots were machines only, they had no spark of intelligence, no self-awareness. Mine did. They could carry what was once humanity's spirit forward.

Sensing my end was near, I switched them on with my last breath. Though the human race was lost, I prayed our "children" would maybe, just maybe, outwit the swarms of dark robots and survive.

I died and woke up.
