Seriously guys, I am just about popping out of my skin in excitement. My amazing boyfriend Adrian helped me pay to register for Carlos Huante's creature design course, and the 10-week craziness starts this Saturday. What a birthday present - I mean, holy crapI will be doing my best to keep up with commissions and MythWing along the side, but my need for creature design and the next level of rendering skills is going to be so wondrously sated with this. I have, for my entire life, looked at and aspired to be like those I've seen in the behind-the-scenes footage of Jurassic Park, Reign of Fire, The Cave, concepting and sculpting the monsters, making them REAL, and any movie I still watch to this day, every book, every game, I am magnetized towards the descriptions of creatures. They fuel me. Burying my nose deep into book after book and movie after movie of dinosaurs, birds, fish, reptiles, zoology, biomechanics, ecology, taphonomy, morphology, looking for what is the most accurate and up to date - this is my life. <3

To be under the tutelage of a trail-blazing creature designer and pure anatomy surrealist like Huante is a Dream. Come. True. He busted through the window when the movies had no such thing as a position for 'creature designer' - the costume and prop makers designed and made the creatures. Greats like Ray Harryhausen. But, in comes Huante, like a bat out of hell, determined to do what he loves, and damn those who say nay. Illustrators and painters are in the realm of the designers now, where light and shadow can help one 'cheat' out of describing what a creature truly looks like, but there might still be room for the nuts-and-bolts designers out there. And I am so, SO glad to be able to learn from this absolute giant.
