Outrage and tunnel vision by Kalmor

We all get angry or pissed off at something. Those that know and follow me definitely know I do especially when it comes to FA related things. I do try to keep this reaction in check though, making sure it is based on facts. It's part of the reason why I agreed to bring Zidonuke on to the recent FNS livestream to put the record straight about the technical details of the FA hack as there was a lot of misinformation spreading around, even from me.

However, when you get mad at something, most people get tunnel vision, closing themselves off to other opinions and perspectives, unable to fathom editing their own. I'm guilty of this sometimes until I step back and look at the situation with a calm head (as we call it here). I'm not saying you ~have~ to change your opinion, just to have to be respectful and consider other people's points of view and not go for an outright verbal assault.

It's not "losing the argument" if you say "I understand your opinion, but I disagree, and we'll have to agree to disagree". There's no point in thirsting for blood or heads in these situations. It's just makes you look like a bit of a dick to neutral parties especially.

Don't let your opinions become part of your identity either, this just leads to being even more irrational about them and reluctant to consider alternatives. Opinions are things you carry with you, they aren't who you are.

Of course, I wouldn't like to be in FN's shoes right now. Their objective - as a furry creative site - is to appeal to as many people as possible, that includes people who like, erm, questionable content. You can't exactly blame them when they want to maximise their audience.

However, I think at this point it would be better to go with the decision that would please the most people, since, as frustrating as it is, no one will be happy with half measures. This is what happens when this sort of outrage gets out of control:

"You're with us, or against us"

Do I want to see cub porn banned? Yes. I think g this is the better long term solution in terms of audience retention.

Do I think the current policy (required tagging + blacklist) is enough? Yes, in fact, at least for me. As long as I don't see it, which is what current policy allows me to do, then I couldn't care less.

There's also this whole thing going around where people seem to thing that if someone posts something to a site, the site itself endorses that thought or opinion. This couldn't be further from the case, in my opinion. If it were, then apparently liveleak endorses ISIS beheading and youtube endorses endorses... Well everything short of nsfw content and terrorism. I'm pretty sure the people that running those sites don't...

But yeah, I'd thought I'd ramble my thoughts for you guys.
