FA Staff screwed up big time this time. (Information and rant.) by ToxicAudri

Oh yeah they did it this time, for those of you that don't know FA was attacked by a hacker this week, lots of data was stolen, in fact the entire code was stolen through an exploit in a plugin, a major breach in security that allowed a hacker to obtain a copy of the entire code FA runs on, this also included users emails and passwords.

As of today May 20th 2016 FA was forced into a read only mode as staff discovered that hackers were hacking into peoples accounts gasp you don't say, I advise everyone that uses or had used FA to change their passwords if they use the same passwords for any other accounts they have.

The attack occurred on the 17th of May, it consisted of the hacker/s deleting everything, because of such the staff were forced to resort to using a back up, that was a week old, this back up was created on May 11th, people still lost plenty of watches, and submission because of this, but by the 18th the site was brought back online, the staff was confident that the hacker/s couldn't access the passwords or emails of the user base because it was supposedly hashed and salted they also didn't believe that user account data has been compromised, however just two day later it was learned that the hacker/s were logging into peoples accounts forcing the staff to go into read only mode.

My thought's on this whole debacle is purely one of "I told you so" I had complained in the past many times that such was just a time bomb waiting to happen, with the rise of Furry Network and with the availability of other art sites like Weasyl, Inkbunny and etc, I think FA is likely in it's death throes, but who knows, maybe people will continue to cling to the one art site they know so well despite all the crap that comes with it.

But poor leadership and a poor oversight have weakened FA over the years, with several users becoming rather fed up with FA's crap and becoming more and more vocal, it still seems to be in the overall minority, but with the fact that none of it is anything new I am fairly confident that such will lead to more users becoming fed up and becoming vocal about it.

Fact is I expected with such a breach in security for the FA staff to notify the user base that the potential of users accounts being compromised was a possibility and forcing everyone to change their passwords, more so after it was learned that a usb containing FA's code was being passed around at a furry convention, all this was learned about before the May 17th attack, but per usual FA's staff sat on their ass until the attack happened.

Plain and simple I am so beyond sick of this kinda piss poor crap, one issue after another, if it's not some kinda drama affecting the site it's poor oversight causing issues, with backups happening I assume weekly for an art site as large as FA it's unacceptable, and to really put the cherry on top, the staff also claims that they can't keep daily backups due to storage issues, I thought the whole point of FA being sold to IMVU was so that this kinda thing wouldn't be an issue anymore, but clearly once again money has become an issue.

I am seriously so close to just saying fuck it, to just resorting to doing anything and everything to get myself banned so I have no excuse to return to FA again and never have to deal with the site's shit.

Anyway rant over, feel free to comment with your thoughts I would enjoy a discussion.

I jumped ship almost a year ago and never looked back. Best decision ever.

    • Link

Yeah, that's my sentiment, unfortunately I have several friends who are exclusively on FA, ONLY reason I still frequent the site at this point.

      • Link

just talk with them about this event, to convince them to move, especially that account info got also leaked, easy

        • Link

Oh I have tried to convince them, though they tend to be... lets just say rather picky about other sites, Though a few have settled on other sites, Toyhouse being one, rather hard to get into though as you have to have a code to get in, but it's a start.

          • Link

well, convince them to be more picky with this site then, until it spreads to their friends, and they start an mining operation, and settle here the moment they find an gold vein

            /trollface

            • Link

Oh indeed I am working on that, but not just them, but the whole community over at FA as well, been rocking the boat for a while, this latest bit of disaster only makes it easier.

From calling out Dragoneer on his lies to stating and restating the past history he has built up with the community, all the issues of the past that you would think he learned from.

              • Link

k, though also thought you could have laughed at my reply too, lol

but to be honest, i dont understand why he never learned from past history and mistakes, it confuses me

                • Link

Oh trust me I laughed more then I should have at your comment, though no one can find as much gold as Dragoneer when he goes mining up at mount nose xD

.> but yeah... it's a real big mystery as to why or how he never learns, maybe there is more then just gold coming out his nose.

                  • Link

lol, k, surely he must know much about gold, because after all, despite being an digimon, hes an hybrid of dragon ones, and dragons are always so obsessed with gold (even his name has dragon in it), but because he seems to be with money, it might make him the modern version of an dragon, but i guess its because hes an american, or as some people used to say, capitalistic dog, derp

also, its funny this event is reminding me of nostalrius

I agree with Borgri. I was exclusive to FA at one point as well, but eventually enough is enough.

        • Link

A lot of people were exclusive to FA, however I see more and more "where to find me journals" after every bit of shit FA experiences, some state they are still going to be active on FA others state they are leaving for good finally, at this point I am fairly sure that FA is losing members as fast as they gain members.

I just wonder how long before that trend turns to losing faster than gaining.

  • Link

I left nice people behind...but I am glad I left. Though my reason for leaving was different than the worry over site maintenance. I plan never to return to the site.

I hope an oversight as disastrous as this may motivate people to look further than FA. Because the only reason that site is still up is because people keep crawling back after disasters like this. :(

    • Link

True I often see a huge increase in the numbers of people online after a major disaster or large scale drama exploding, but I have seen that more and more people are on other sites as well, that people are trying to get away from FA, but the issue I see and have heard is that artists that want to leave don't feel they can because all their watchers are on FA, and the watchers that want to leave don't feel they can because all their favorite artists are on FA, it's honestly a rather vicious circle, that hopefully with the availability of other and better sites will break the chain.

      • Link

I hope people can learn to graduate away from FA...the users and the artists both. There are other sites that are better maintained...and once people agree to be active on them, it'll pick up.

After all...everybody was brand-new to FA once and didn't have watchers or commissioners. They just need to dedicate themselves to building that fan-base on other sites, too...then they'll be as well known there, too. :)

        • Link

Agree, I have already seen many artists set up shop on other sites for a host of reasons, ranging from being banned to because the site goes down from time to time, I have seen a lot of big name artists on Furry Network, Renashe whom was banned and SixthLeafClover who appears to have created an account because of FA's down time.

I think FA may be pretty screwed at this point, with the site in read only mode artists are forced to use other sites as nothing can be posted on FA currently, time will tell how long the site remains in read only mode though, but the longer it does the more likely people won't return to FA becomes.

          • Link

I hope so...for the artists sake. Whenever I have extra time to be somewhere with wi-fi...I want to look into Furry Network, because I know Mao really likes it. And maybe I'll find some of those people from FA that I liked, but decided Weasyl was too quiet for them. :)

            • Link

Still in the process of making my account, but if you care for my two cents worth on it, at the surface it's not bad, granted I have only just scratched the surface with the site having had the account for less then a few days, but the syntax they use is pretty easy to learn and you can do quite a bit with it, they have an import function for FA and likely to support other art sites in the future making uploading fast and easy between sites without the requirement of a plugin, the importer will also transfer over all your watches, if someone you watched on FA links their account on Furry Network it will automatically watch them for you (as the importer claims) currently I cannot test the importer function as FA is just plan broke due to this whole mess.

I don't know if you can see my profile from this link, but if you can you will notice I have all my information set up along with being able to link over to other places and put images (gif supported) into these areas as well.

I'll look at it on Monday, when I can use my laptop and the wi-fi. Thanks for the info! :D

-hugs- Also bit of an update for ya, FA is crashing and burning currently and I am in the comments enjoying the show as people flock to other sites, FN traffic is up according to them and I have seen more then enough people saying they are leaving to another site to know that FN is one of them more then likely.

                      • Link

Let's hope this really motivates people to truly leave and not just flock back to the site when it's back up! XD

                      • Link

I went and made an FN account and followed you. It's @keirajo (because everyone knows that name), but I think most of the art I will post will be Wabi-centric (until I learn to use the site more). :)

Now I need to go find Mao over there................ XD

No surprise that this happened again. FA hasn't changed since the old days. Now that the CODE has been taken (unlike last time ages ago where it was "just" a username/password list posted all over the internet ><) , I doubt that they will change it --- they had FOREVER to go with more secured open sourced back-end code that they can get support for but NOPE, they had to take the fool's road.

    • Link

Yeah it really is no surprise, but it's actually much worse than just the code being taken, accounts were compromised and staff had to lock the site down, this whole mess could have been avoided easily at the start by just shutting the site down at the first sign of a possible attack, that sign was the USB flash drive that contained the code that was being passed around at BLFC I believe it was, but like I said in typical fashion staff sat idly by and waited for an attack to happen.

  • Link

I'm more active here than on FA. But I gotta take care of some unfinished business first. FA users are going to realize the "owners" don't care about them. They're just interested in their own power.

    • Link

Sadly the newer users will have to learn the hard way like many of us older users had to, I still see far too much praise in the Fender journal comments, to me it's all a bunch of cock stroking of the staff for doing what they are supposed to do but still fail to do.

But I do think you nailed it on the point of the owners don't care, it's all just about power, Neer claims that FA is a home to him, but he really doesn't treat it like such.
