Discrimination by sixrabbits

Trying to explain discrimination to a guy who has never been the target of discrimination is pretty frustrating sometimes. Specifically when he acts like someone being specifically protected under the law makes him less protected...

Ugh....

Here's the deal.
When a person is targeted because of their sexuality/gender identity/race/sex/disability they are the victim of a hate crime. These crimes are not just a threat to one person, they are a threat to an entire group of people.
When someone kills a black man for being black, they are likely to victimize other black people. When someone kills a man over an argument about a barking dog, and the victim happens to be black, they are a shitty person but they are not as likely to go around killing other people just for having a barking dog. In the first case race is the only or primary factor, in the second case race is of little importance and the argument is the primary motivation for the murder.
It's the same reason we charge involuntary manslaughter differently from premeditated homicide.

Oh but, now we're saying it's more okay to kill someone by accident! Yeah, he used that logic that by having laws against hate crimes we're saying it's more okay to murder someone over a barking dog than because of their race.
This is not a sliding scale of badness. It's taking into account the INTENT of the person charged.

"Where does it end? If we have special protections for transpeople, then why not people with green eyes?"
Uh... because people with green eyes don't have multiple hate groups targeting them. If anyone goes around murdering people with green eyes its more a specific pathology. The entire community of people with green eyes are not likely to be worried that they will be the next target of some random attack, they are not talking about how it's just like that time someone else with green eyes got murdered in another state. However, there are multiple hate groups and just plain hateful individuals that go about attacking people because of their race/gender identity/sex/sexuality/disability/. When a gay man gets stabbed on the street outside of a gay club, then a whole community has to wonder if they could be next.

I don't know why this is hard for some people to understand. Like are you jealous that some folks are getting much needed protection??? Were you the kind of child that pitched a fit that it wasn't fair that the kid in a wheelchair didn't have run laps in gym?

This is what I will think of every time I see someone say something as stupid as "why do we need speshul protections for so and so" or anything like that.

Generally, I assume people who don't get it are coming largely from a place of ignorance (not necessarily malicious). They're either lacking empathy, not understanding that they don't fit into the equation and cannot believe other people have different experiences than they do (or their perception of what they believe those people experience).
Or, for whatever reason, they don't find it worth sympathizing with. For instance, (speculaaatiooon) if they're seeing LGBT people all over their favorite shows and movies, it's normal now, they don't need special protection. Or every person who touts that racism is over because, tadah!, black president.

They're wrong. But probably not bad people. Probably just have some socially induced prejudices they don't realize they have and actively exercise. Just keep being calm and rational. Even if they don't get it today, tomorrow, or next week.
And that comic linked above is pretty fabulous.

I think it's definitely a self centered issue, their responses were mostly about how everyone should be equal and completely ignoring when I brought up the statistics for number of LGBT persons were murdered or assaulted last year. They kept on and on with this "well its bad if ANYONE gets assaulted. Murder is murder." I linked them the FBI definition of what a hate crime is and how it is different from a "run of the mill assault" but they insist that it is no different no matter what the motive. They actually said "well it makes it seem like other crimes are more or less okay in comparison"... again, sliding scale of badness.
I've wasted too much time on this person. If they are just going to ignore everything I say in favor of "but it has to be about me too!" then I'm not going to bother. It's not my job, and I have so much else that I'm being paid to do than to sit around and try to make someone understand something they refuse to understand.

      Yes it is.

        That sounds good too.
        Hopefully eventually they get it~

Honestly i think that people who just don't get it like the one you are talking about have a VERY self centric view of the world. To them it really is taking something away from them (basically attention, but i doubt it's thought of that way consciously) They see it as a zero sum game because to them it is and the sum is always them.

I dunno, kinda hard to put into words...

I get what you are saying. Yes, they act like we are getting special privileges while they get nothing.
They kept up with the "it's bad if ANYONE gets assaulted" after I linked them the FBI definition and description of Hate Crimes and why it's different.

Sigh. i'd not talk to them again. I bet it's not that easy though...

Eh, that's the first time I'd exchanged more than 3 words with them. They also defended the use of "irregardless"
