Windows 10? by Cowboypunk

I'm looking at new laptops and am torn between getting a newer one with Win 10 or an older one with 8. I would prefer 7 but have literally not a single ounce of interest in buying and installing it separately. I know a lot of not-so-fun things about 10 and have had a lot of not-so-fun things happen with 8, so I'm waffling awfully hard over here.

Any one have it or just know more about it? Any thoughts?

I've always read that 7 less annoying and less buggy than both, but 10 less catastrophic than 8, although terrible for privacy stuff.

Pretty much what I hear too. Literally the moment I got my tablet with 8, it derped hard enough that I had to send it in for a fresh OS install. SO I can't say I'm looking forward to either of them, and even after getting a new PC may end up coasting on my current one for work until I feel comfortable that 8 or 10 wont arbitrarily fart or reject/ruin my essential software. The privacy issues with 10 and the sheer amount of pushiness MS has been displaying for it are a massive turn off, though.

I'm still using 7 for now and 10 will have to fight me to update, I won't go without screaming and kicking.

That's pretty much how I'm feeling lol. In the like 5-6 years I've been using 7 I've had less problems than I've had with my 6 months of 8, and MS has been gross enough about 10 that they've made me dislike it before even seeing it.

buy 7 separately and install it seriously
on the + side having an install disk lying around saved my ass a couple times when my old computer fucked

tbh, I just can't really afford a new computer AND a separately purchased OS (plus I just have no interest in doing a lot of setup to get working on the new laptop), so it's not really an option :V womp womp

are you a student or anything
i got mine for free just for going to college
and does downgrading an os really have a lot of setup to go through compared to buying a whole new computer? unless it already comes with like antivirus, programs, etc and shit i guess

        • Link

Nope, I have to give real monies. :\
I'm getting the new comp no matter what, installing a different, older OS onto it after purchase may or may not run into miscellaneous weird problems and takes up extra time and energy that could have been spent just learning the packaged OS. It's just more steps that introduces the potential for more issues that I really don't need or want to deal with.

Windows 10 is a filthy trap. It literally is spyware. You have to cripple the new features in the OS otherwise it records EVERYTHING you do on it. It records what you type, what you say when you're near your PC if it has a mic, what images you look at, everything.

I know it has a lot of gross privacy issues, but that sounds pretty dang alarmist right there :T
I understand a lot of that is tied to the use of Cortana so that it will function usefully and develop better, but which I won't be using anyway because I'm an old man. Otherwise, several other people elsewhere have noted their systems still work fine after turning off/making workarounds for basically every privacy issue (barring a few weird extra things, like the start menu connecting to bing every time you search in it for seemingly no reason??).

Overall, I'm less concerned with MS spying on me with a lot of these issues - the likelihood that MS is going to do some skeevy shit to me personally with data collected by my computer usage seems pretty dang slim, unless they're really judgmental about what games I play on steam or how much I draw/stare at my finished drawings in terrible existential anguish - than I am concerned with the doors the data collection opens for legitimately malicious individuals who now have another point of access to my passwords and shit than if it were all just local. I'm getting the feeling that a lot of the panic seen in regards to the privacy issues are akin to the panics occasionally spread about DeviantArt having all rights to your art in their TOS, when they're just making sure you don't sue them because your art that you posted is displayed on their site. Not saying I'm cool with a LOT of MS's actions either, which have been unacceptably pushy and largely seem to be detrimental to people who aren't well versed in their computer's functions, but my concerns are largely directed at extra backdoors and general bugginess.

And yea, Im worried about the backdoors that are open for others. The problem is if MS is doing the recording of all this data, it's probably easily picked up by third parties as its recorded or sent (or even after it arrives at MS?). I want an OS that PREVENTS people from recording everything I do, not streamlines the identity theft for any old internet-goer. You can totally turn the privacy issues off (for the most part), but not all of them. Some of them you actually either have to delete system files or run programs to delete them for you to prevent it from sending some of the data.

As far as buginess and general function, it's actually not that bad! I'd say the OS started on the wrong foot with me after reading the TOS (which no one does) and seeing that they blatantly say they're going to record every image you look at, every game you play, and everything you type. And if they find out you're doing anything slightly illegal, they're going to throw you under the bus to the feds. It's a bit too big brother for me! They'll find my illegal imaginary alpaca farm!

It's definitely really gross that they reduce so many privacy freedoms. Staying as local as possible should always be an easy option to use. It's a very unsettling turn for Windows to make.

I did happen to get to play with 10 today helping my friend, who previously used a mac, move over to a new PC with it. It handles pretty okay! And definitely feels like an improvement compared to 8. I dislike how much more difficult it is to customize the appearance, though :T (also his new PC is pretty rad and nice and shiny, too!)

          • Link

            Im jealous of new shiny rad PCs! Mine are like, held together with bubblegum and duct-tape.. >_>;;;;;

Haha, mine's about at that point too
