Just Thinking (Screenwriters, Please Read!) by Threetails

If "Zootopia" does extremely well with adult audiences, it might be worthwhile to turn some of my stories into screenplays. I'm thinking- and I could be terribly, horribly misguided with this since the story has absolutely zero kid-friendly appeal- that with the more explicit scenes removed and the dialogue reworked a bit, "Basecraft Cirrostratus" might make a good screenplay to submit to agencies.

The title "Basecraft Cirrostratus" is a bit clumsy for the screen, I think. The working title of this project would be "Steel Clouds" though I don't know if that's any good since it's awfully close to "Iron Sky."

There's a lot of queer content so it's unlikely Disney would touch it, but if Disney does well with a gritty noir story involving anthro characters then other studios might be interested in taking it a step further and produce an interesting story.

Then there's nostalgia. There's a surprising amount of nostalgia for shows like "TaleSpin" with adults who saw it when it first came out, and of course there's also "The Rocketeer."

And really, dieselpunk is an under-exploited genre in Hollywood in general (I can name maybe four feature films since 1990 off the top of my head). I think there's room for more.

Now here's the problem: I find the format of screenplays frustrating and difficult to work with. I have absolutely no talent for screenwriting. Half the time I can't even get the page numbering in OpenOffice to do what I tell it to so that I don't have my cover sheet as page 1.

If anyone with skills as a screenwriter wants to have a go at working with me as your co-writer to produce a screenplay of "Cirrostratus," get in touch.

First, of course, I have to get back to work on proofing a Spanish translation of another one of my stories. But I want to get this out there because it's an idea I've been kicking around and I honestly don't know if it's any good or not.

The format does kind of suck to write if you like creative writing. However the mechanics of the format are simple and really not for normal word processors (unless you want to waste time). "Final Draft" is the software you'll want to use.

I found a screenwriting template for OpenOffice that's pretty intuitive, actually. I've been working on that tonight and I find that once I got started it flowed pretty naturally. I'm making changes to the text on the fly but the changes are pretty easy to make because there's a lot of fluff, filler, inner monologue, backstory dump, and general excess I can trim out to make it flow nicely as a screenplay. It was a very "cinematic" book to begin with, and I was pretty much watching a movie in my head while I was writing it, so I have a good idea of how it should play out on screen.
