As a young man Avery had lived in the northeast United States in a quiet West Virginia town. He had two parents and a younger brother. Living in the suburbs he enjoyed a relatively normal childhood.

He joined the army at 18, and rose through the ranks to the position of Lieutenant Colonel through his efforts. Serving in numerous campaigns he was decorated several times. When the war began he was assigned to Fort Drum. As the war intensified and the government fell apart, he and the rest of the army soldiers attempted to restore order. For a short time the US Army, Navy, and Air Force cooperated in their efforts to return the United States to its previous state. After a few years the three powers began to disagree about their methods, and a civil war began.

When the Army was shattered, its members scattered across the former United States. Lieutenant Colonel Wells took the last of his soldiers and fled until they arrived at Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Personal Statement:

"My name is Lieutenant Colonel Avery Wells. I'm a soldier. It's what I've always been. It's the only thing I know how to be. Before the war I always knew I'd join the army. It wasn't due to my parents. My father hoped I'd be an accountant. My mother wanted me to be a chef. I didn't really have an aptitude for either if you ask me. When I was old enough I signed up and shipped out to boot camp. I gave my mother a hug and my dad a big old fashioned handshake.

Some people hate getting up early and running through mud in heavy boots but I was at home here. I loved training and learning how to keep my body in peak physical condition. I knew I belonged here. Though I'd always intended to protect my country I never thought I'd be pressed into service in an actual war. For a long time while I worked my way up the ranks we came close but it always seemed one side or the other would back down or we'd find a compromise. I guess it only takes once.

When the war broke out I picked up my weapon and did my duty. It dragged on for four months before someone finally launched a nuke. Things went to shit after that. A lot of major cities took damage but more than a few survived the initial blasts. They went for big targets. D.C, New York, London, those sorts of places.

In the months following the attacks, we attempted to reestablish a chain of command. The president and his entire cabinet were gone. No one knew if anyone was left in the chain of succession. When no one came forward we fell into chain of command. The Army, the Air Force, and the Navy pooled together to try and bring things back to the way they were. It worked for a little while. Things almost felt normal. After a while when survival became less pressing we started to argue. Little things at first. Like which branch was in charge of what and how we should proceed. Arguments escalated into a civil war.

The Army took a stand for liberty above all. While I'm sure a lot of the members of the other two branches still believed in the idea of freedom, I think they just went along with their leaders because after all we'd been through they just wanted some normalcy. I can't say I blame them. We fought the Air Force and the Navy on one side and the Academy and the Initiative on the other. In time, we were broken. The Army could no longer sustain itself and we scattered.

I remember the day our last base fell. It felt like the end of the war all over again. The air force flew over and destroyed most of the buildings. I got out with about twenty of my men. I didn't see what happened to the others. We fled west but between raiders and everything else, our numbers dwindled. I did all I could to keep us together, but by the time we got to Albuquerque, there were only four of us left. Kennedy, myself, and two others.

We got trapped in a college building and against all logic, I sent out a distress call. I'll never forget my surprise when someone responded. A young girl, young enough to be my daughter. She and another young woman came to our rescue. Somehow they got through the raiders and saved us with no benefit to themselves. I don't know what it was, but seeing that kind of selfless heroism woke something up in me that day. I hoped she could do the same for the rest of my fellow soldiers. We recruited her and left to find the others. Maybe we're not done after all..."
